Do all AAZs take a 200mm clutch? I'm considering the Stage 2 from Clutchnet. I'm only planning on changing the injector size to .205 and adding an intercooler. My project is a 1.9 AAZ engine into a 1982 MK1 Caddy. I'm hoping for something close to 100 HP from the stock 75 HP. Is this reasonable?
-
The AAZ, depending on what transmission it had hooked up to it, had anywhere from the 210 to 228mm clutch. 100HP sounds fine, just remember that clutches are better rated by torque than horsepower. Also, what is your trans code? Input shaft tooth count or diameter?
-
I know it is a diesel 5 spd. I think I remember looking once before and the code is 020.

.205 injectors?
arent those TDI injectors?
you can get 100hp on a 100% stock engine, just by tuning it good, and adding a good exhaust.
i bet you could get 125hp if you turned up your boost, fueling, and did the governor mod..
btw, NO AAZ came with a 200mm clutch.. only old rabbits got a 200mm clutch..
yours should have a 210mm clutch, and i would not use anything smaller..

Yup there are no injector upgrades for the IDI engines, that will do any good at least.. lol I do believe the OP is still caught in the research stage, and has confused his Indirect Injected 1.9 Turbo Diesel for a Direct Injected 1.9, also known as TDI.
I have a tuned AAZ with a maxed out pump running a 200mm clutch, and it does fine. There is NO increase in grabbing power between the 190, 200 and 210mm clutches. Only more clutch disk, therefore longer change intervals.

the 210mm disk with a 16v pressure plate DOES GRAB HARDER..
all i changed was the pressure plate, and the clutch grabbed way harder..

Possibly, it depends on the condition of both pressure plates. If the 210mm pp was burnt or even resurfaced with hard spots then the lack of grabbing can be attributed to that.
Not saying your lying or wrong, just being the devils advocate :)

Yeah. You used a 16v pressure plate.. IT does grab harder. But stock 190 200 and 210 8v there is no difference.

A larger diameter clutch disc has greater friction surface area and so with a pressure plate of similar strength it will hold against greater torque. My mTDI will easily slip a 200mm clutch.

Yep it is just like tires on the road. I think what 8v is saying is the spring rate is the same, which may or may not be, but that would further illustrate Libby's post if they are. Also, the bigger clutches will have to have a bigger pp as well. I don't think you can put a 210mm clutch into a 190mmpp is what I am saying.
-
I have heard it stated that the three sizes of 8v clutch all have the same holding power. Different than tires on a road.

no way.. 210mm clutches are capable of holding back more torque than a 200mm, or 190mm unit..
the only way a 200mm unit would hold the same tq as a 210, is with a tougher pressure plate..
the 210mm unit has more surface area, so in turn, will take more tq to make it slip..

What would be the ideal clutch for an 82 Vanagon camper (fully loaded) with about 120-130 HP AAZ? It has the 6 rib 4 speed from a gasser and the tallest tires I could fit into the wheel wells.
I believe my stocker is 200 but it could be 210
Fresh IP (Giles brand) and cooled air as well.
This will be a daily so I'd rather not jerk my wife's neck - too much anyway ;D

I have heard it stated that the three sizes of 8v clutch all have the same holding power. Different than tires on a road.
what I am going for here is wider tire takes more g force to break loose into a lateral slide, more surface area...wider diameter clutch will take more torque to break it loose, same more surface area.
Back on point the 210mm setup stock will hold the 100hp goal you have and more. No clue what my old 1.6 was making but I can say for certian it was over 100hp as Giles said the pump should have got me there. I had the stock aaz setup in my car for 10,000 miles and never slipped it once. It was a Luk brand clutch.

back to you. . .
this talk of 190, 200, and 210mm clutches doesnt apply to you..
even if it did, your setup is ENTIRELY different than the 020 we run in our FWD vws..
you need to get an appropriate clutch for your transmission..

Back to my original comments. Yes I was assuming the injectors could be upgraded since I did the same on my 01 TDI. So now I know I can't do that. On the clutch, since I am mating the AAZ engine to an 82 Caddy that used to have a 1.6 NA with 5 spd. Will the flywheel on the AAZ engine fit in the bellhousing of the 5 spd? I am assuming that it is larger than the stock 1.6NA. I think the stock 1.6 is a 200mm and the AAZ is a 210mm but I'm not sure. I'm trying to get the parts bought before I tear it all apart. Thanks to all for your help.

You straight answer your question, yes it will fit. Here's the next bit though. I'd recommend you chanes your tranny and get away from the 1.6 na one. You will be revving 3750 doing 120 ish. I'd change to a 1.9 tranny or a 1.6td tranny.
If for some reason you continue to use the 1.6 tranny then you will have* to use an 8v clutch. *assuming the tranny is a small spline, generally all are but check and confirm.
