Wow, that is nice information- some of the best diagrams and descriptions for the VE pump that I have seen. Thanks for the work! I can only imagine how tedious it was to scan all that in...

Thanks for the manual, I discovered it by accident, but I will need it.
I just aquired an 81 diesel rabbit and it is a mosquito fogger on wheels!!!
It starts easily and seems to run strong, but it has a serious smoking habit.
It also needs a tranny, it is sticking in most gears.....
Are the trannies worth rebuilding, or should I look for a used one?
Is there a procedure for isolating the smoke problem, or should I do the top end???
Any info would be welcomed....

What color is the smoke?
-
I'd check the shift linkages before the tranny's... the tranny's will take a lot of abuse (unless of course the car is highly modded for power  )
**My shift linkage was really 'gummy' when cold, but really nice and loose when warm. I got the car oil sprayed by rust check, and they lubed it all up! now my shifter is loose when cold too... couldn't hurt to get your tranny oil changed too... most people here recommend redline synthetic.
as for the smoke... maybe someone turned up the fuel screw??? low compression will give a lot of smoke as well. Think of black smoke as unburnt fuel.
It is also bad to be smoking too much because of the abrasiveness of the soot carbons that mix with the oil. The oil filter does a poor job at getting the tinier particles that do most of the damage to the motor.
oh yea.. I'm just guessing the smoke is black. If we're talking white, then you got some bad injectors/compression

This tranny was mostly sticking in 3rd, to the point that you had
to hammer the top lever on the tranny to get it out, then it started sticking in the rest of the gears, I was told that this is a typical failure mode for the tranny...
The engine smoke is grey, not black and it doesn't smoke too much once it is fully warmed up.

I'd check the shift linkages
PS, is there a standard metal replacement for the ^&%#* plastic "hiem" type linkage to the shift arm?
I broke the plastic link when hammering the tranny out of gear......
If I knew it was plastic, I would have tried to be more careful, but I have never seen a plastic linkage like that before....

im not sure about a metal aftermarket shift linkage system.
i had second gear stick on me... 3rd was never really a problem.. but my 2nd gear synchronizer is pretty much fried... as it grinds sometimes if i dont let the rpms drop.. but it still drives fine! I just changed the tranny oil. i hate 1st to 2nd gear on my tranny :(
