I've been driving this guy for just over 2 years.

Eeeenterrrestink, tell me more!
Aside from the odd wires in the firewall, that is a 100% fresh swap! Love it a lot an hope it's as fun s it looks to drive. How's mileage on that thing? Thrown .216 nozzles in it?
Hope the interior is not the cloth one; those always seem torn up and loose when they come in for services. Either way, nice to see a B5 DD that's not in a heap.

Hey CrazyAndy
Its not a swap actually! Its the original 1998 VW Passat TDI auto show car.
It has an AHH engine - its like an AHU but with a 11mm pump and VNT turbo and it has a 5spd mated to the back of it.
I currently have HFLOX Warp3 nozzles in it, but will be installing Warp 5 nozzles very soon when I put my BV43a back in. I was making about 180hp with it before my TIP fell off and damaged my turbo.
Interior is black leather, it was previously beige leather but it got badly damaged by the previous owner. The drivers seat bolster actually broke open at the auto show as I am told.

wires on the firewall are for boost and EGT.

andy.. its got a real goofy waterpump too... the alt bracket is the pump housing.. but good news.. since vw did import and sell 2 thru the stealership... they have to import you the pump when required.. aka no shipping cost..
above info is something i read when looking at doing such a swap... 2 years ago...
-
This is true, however its still cheaper to buy an aftermarket water pump and have it shipped here :)
CRSMP5, where did you read that?
I'm even having trouble finding any true evidence that the second one really exists over here. I have heard so much conflicting information - even from techs that have ordered parts and seen it, that I think they're mixing up details or talking about mine from when previous owners had it serviced.

WANT. :D
If I could get a TDI into my 4-Motion manual wagon, I could die happy. :-*

THAT passat!? No effing way, so cool! How'd it make it out to the public after the showing back in '98? Got any documentation?
I'll admit, the reason that I thought it was a swap was not because of the wires in the bay, but the slightly off-kilter trunk TDI emblems. Kinda dumb, but many folks just can't line those up, so I'm a bit used to seeing crooked emblems on swapped cars.
That car is is the stars-aligned icon of what everyone in the TDI boards would want in a B5; manual trans, VE-pumped, VNT, black leather, wood grain panels. Classy like a boss. 8)
CRSMP5, how's the water pump weird? Spins backwards? Weird hub sizing?

Here is the water pump/housing

yes, the emblems are crooked, its had some body work done and still needs more.
I have the original purchase receipt from 2001 - it sat in a warehouse from 98 to 2001 then was auctioned off.
-
goes into alt bracket... round kinda like a northstar design... not used on other vws i know of... does not use the 74-99.5 waterpump housing... its cast into the alt bracket.. then kinda like mk4 style pump into it... but run by v belts...
where did i read... LOL google search... been way too long.. and how i found it..
4 moton tranny bolts to tdi... so do it..

;D Yeah, right? Naw, this would be much quicker, especially w/ a donor car; this sort of swap is mostly about getting the electronics to play nice... VAG-COM all the way, since we only have a few manual TDIs I'd have to massage a few ECU and trans codes from existing modules. The hard part is finding a suitably-geared transmission, I'd have to get one from Europe. Not impossible, but $$. Maybe a W8 6-spd would work, but those aren't exactly laying about in heaps, either.
I learned my lesson w/ the van; ONE PROJECT AT A TIME. I was still playing with my Subaru for a few years, and it divided my time and attention too much. :P
Anyway, this swap is on my bucket list.

ONE PROJECT AT A TIME.
I am having this problem :) Luckily I'm nearly done with the Passat, or at least I can just drive it now. My other project will be way more fun, I need to focus on that.
I installed my PD170 BV43a on Saturday. Its so nice to have my ~175hp back!

Pretty major mod here, I made a custom intake starting with a BEW(US sped PD100) and installed

That's weird, it uses an AAZ-style valve cover. Didn't notice that previously. Are you just running a road tube?
And how much boost? YOU MUST TELL ME!
-
Its an AHU/1Z/AFN/AHH style valve cover, not AAZ ;)
Road tube? whats road tube?
Currently only running 30psi, ***s acting goofy for some reason. I don't think my ECU likes to control anything over 26psi. I ran 32psi for a couple test tunes and that's the end goal
I might drop the boost down a little more because winter tires + 30psi = wheel spin until like 50mph.
-
Road tube is running your PCV hose to atmosphere, around the bottom of the car. Old cars used to do it until the 60s, when they had to run them into the air cleaner for emissions and cleanliness.
Sounds like you're due for a ECM reflash when the weather gets warmer. Probably cuts the MIL on and gives the P0234 code. 25 psi seems to be the limit for stock/light VAG-COM ECM fuel mapping. Or does it do stuff weirder than that?
And yeah, forgot the early TDIs ran 3-nut VCs. Just shows how many come into the dealership anymore. :P
-
Some call it an elephant hose too.
I run it inches from my downpipe to keep it nice and warm in the cold climate.
No P0234 code, its a glow plug code. My ECU is full re-mapped already, done a few tune updates lately. I am running a 4bar map
Its a boost oscillation, normally when the vanes are relaxed to prevent an overboost situation the boost levels out nicely, this turbo seems too anxious and the boost drops rapidly, then it overcorrects, and so on.
