I have 2 pics here, it is a 1.6 block and a 1.9aaz crank. I know it has been discussed before, but I never had pics before. I figured I would share. Basically, the 1.6 block and big rod end work with the 1.9 crank. The 1.9 crank fits into the 1.6 block. You would have to find rods to make it go, but I think it could be done. Someone *think fatmobile* did it and the 1.7 rods were used??? Anyhow, it is something for some of you to work on ;D

The 1.7 rods where the same as the 1.6 rods, same rod and crank, just different bore.
With a longer stroke in the 1.6 short block, one would have to make deeper piston reliefs for the oil cooling jets. Don't know if this is a show stopper or not.
Why even consider putting in the heavy 1.9 crank in a 1.6? That's the main benefit of going the 1.6 route!

I am not doing it. I think I will go TDI from now on, but I just wanted others to know what is possible or the start of it.
I think a stroker diesel would be neat. If I were continuing in the IDI stuff I would do it. Every stroker engine I have been around always has tons of torque, which our diesels have already, but you can never have enough IMHO.

Stroker engines gets more torque from the longer stroked crank (Force x Arm), NOT from the weight of the crank or flywheel...

IIRC fatmobile's engine used the 1.7 pistons in the 1.6 block with the 1.6 crank. I don't recall hearing about it being finished and running. Anyway, did you install the rods on the crank with it in the block? I'm seriously surprised if the rods don't interfere with the case. On the 1.9, the block is bubbled A LOT to give rod clearance for the added stroke. If they would clear, you'd probably end up with displacement somewhere around 1.75L

I did not put the rods on it in the block, so I don't know if it would fit inside the crankcase. Might be some notching required, probably dependant on the rods used. The one issue I did think I saw was the rod where the IM shaft gear is may have interference. I know the crank did rotate well and looked like it had plenty of room on the rod journals without hitting.
Just wanted to make a thread that stated it was a possibility, that is all.

Yes I did the math before, I forget the combo of pistons and rods but u can do it and only need to take 5-10mm off the deck, not quite the entire 16mm difference of the newer block.

Already done it few years ago. With 1,9 NA pistons and ~154mm rods.

The 1.7L KY is the bore of the 1.9 and the stroke of the 1.6.

if you want a stroker, then use the tall block. not the short block..
thats why huge chevy strokers have blocks with much taller decks.. more room for displacement..
making a stroker out of a short block is a BAD IDEA..

MJF was it all stock parts the 1.9 n/a rods and pistons or was it some other combination? Also, you did use the 1.9 block not the 1.6 right? I would think you would have to sleeve the 1.6 to accept the 1.9 pistons as there wouldn't be enough meat to bore. I suppose if one did that they could in theory keep the 1.6 block, crank, rods, and just have it a huge bore.

Tall block with 100mm crank and 141.75mm rods, it's already been done on the TDI engines so would be cool if someone made a similar AAZ ;D

I used AAZ block and some Honda journal Nascar SBC connecting rods.

It threw piston pin at high boost tests. I believe chevy rod small end was too narrow and it let piston pin flex. It made 200whp @30psi and ran 103mph at quarter. I was testing it with ~40psi boost when it exploded. Felt much stronger than before, but it was only buttdyno...
