My main gripe with my Mk1 right now.
The Vent window latches have fallen off. I had them reglued when the windshield was replace, neither took.
I've got a set from a mk1 gti, with bolt in hardware. Do I need to switch the entire frame, or can I get away with just the tabs and window?

Before I tear into it.
Whats required?

IIRC when I removed a set on a Cabriolet, you need to remove the main side glass, all the window channel and unbolt the front window track which carries the vent window. Fairly involved.

Does this help show you what you might be getting into?

Can answer specifics once you see these and have an idea of what we have to go through to get a decent wing vent. I still have to do this on the other side befor it starts raining or just leave it sealed up as it is now.

I've often wondered if one could not drill the plates and glass to use tiny machine bolts. Haven't ever had a spare set I could risk sacrifice to try it, but it seems plausible.

It's tempered glass. It'll shatter.
Taping them shut this year. It's to cold to be fighting a door here in MI

Crap. I kept suggesting it around looking for a good reason it can't be done. Thanks..

It can be done as I have swapped them out in my MK1. The reason it can't be done now is that you really have to tear the whole thing out of the donor door and then remove all the early model hardware before you can reassemble any measure of it. I did a door in one day but was taking my time and pictures and enjoying the 65 degree weather and sunshine. I don't think that is in the near future for anyone in MI right now.
And I used silicone on them the first winter as I got tired of draining the 3 inches of water out of the floorboard every time I had to go to work. Actually got so tired of it I drilled a couple of holes in the corners to make it happen as the water came in.
I really needed a garage then. Still do.

I always wondered why someone didn't make a one piece replacement kit like the 'Cal look' glass for the bugs. Would eliminate the wing/troubles & look way cooler.

My '81 westy MK1 came with non-vent corner glass. Couldn't you swap that in from a comparable model?

Far as I know that is the easiest option. I've never had working wing windows in an A1 chassis car, but I have had them in W114 Mercedes and
old Lincolns and a few other things and really, really liked them. Shame they are such a pain on the Rabbits.
