Title: What's up with this? Refillable strut?

So I swapped to monroe struts on my '92 german golf a couple months ago and today decided to see if my old ones the type that take inserts so I could keep the housings. Sure enough, there's a big external nut on top so I undo it and yank the insert out......only it's not an insert. It's the internals of the damping mechanism.

Oil ran everywhere and there's pistons with o-rings and stuff. Never heard of this style. Any info?

I saw that with an earlier Jetta.
 Probably could be rebuilt if anyone knew how,.. old technology.

Yup, thats an original strut.  If you can find inserts, you are golden.  The inserts include an external tube that fit \s inside so your old tube/body can be reused.

Ever notice how short a life span replacement parts usually have? I like original.

I've never seen that and I've looked at replacement stuff online a LOT.

GAP sell inserts for mk1 front shocks.

Unless it was made 15 years ago, its the same quality as every other replacement part out there ;) Even if it is an OEM brand. You are fixing your strut housing with a replacement insert, the housing surely will never stop doing its job unless damaged.

well I've heard of inserts, I thought there was some sort of sleeve used to put an insert into this housing.........

I recently bought a pair of Monroe SensaTrac inserts for my Cabriolet from Rock Auto for $13 each.  When I saw they were made in Belgium  I bought another pair for my pickup.  I like picking off their closeouts because they tend to be NOS stuff.  How about MOOG(USA) geaseable Mk1 tie rod ends for $5?
