Title: Vacuum pump question
Post by: mtnbob on July 27, 2012, 10:31:48 pm
I have the newer style vacuum pump. Installing my vacuum pump from old engine to new engine. Are there any gaskets or o-rings that i need to use. Some illustrations show a green o-ring and some show a seal at the end of the gear. Mine seems to have neither. Anyone run into this?

The older vac pump is a diaphram and has niether. The newer is a vane pump and has both. Some years had a different height oil pump and sometimes you run into issues with them not spinning the pump or not engaging the IM teeth.

If you are going from a vane to vane there are no issues and you vane pumps have both o rings.

I'm not seeing o-rings on the vacuum pump that came out of my 1.6 or on the one from my 1.6td. It almost looks like a seal is on the sealing edge of the pump where it touches the block, but it is not obvious and might just be part of the pump. I just keep seeing pics of the pump with a green o-ring.

Yes, there is supposed to be an o-ring (nothing fancy) in that groove exactly where you are worrying about.

Take the pump to a hardware dealer or pump place and get some o-rings which will fit in the groove. Have a few on hand. Done....no more drama.

You also MUST have the seal in the bottom of the gear and the oil pump with the hole in the shaft.  If not, the vacuum pump will not work.
