Title: How to clock turbo exhaust side
Post by: myke_w on February 16, 2006, 09:54:31 am
I am at a loss for how one goes about clocking the exhast side of the turbo to the center cartridge. Mine is such a tight fit, that I have to heat the hot side to  get it to even fit down in... Of course, once its fit in, it's tight, and the bolts cant be started because there's no clearence. I've cleaned it well too, can someone help? I need to get this clam back together..

I really doubt those pieces are supposed to be an interference fit like you describe, but I have found they can get bound up due to rust and scale build-up on the mating surfaces.

Try wire brushing the rust off the outer edge of the center section (using a bench wire wheel or a stiff hand brush) as well as inside the groove of the turbine housing (using a stiff hand brush or rotary die-grinder brush.)  Go at the rust until it is just smooth bare metal.

I'll bet that with the rust removed, that the pieces go together nice and tight, but not bound up.  Hope this helps... good luck.

the IHI turbo that I run had a small little metal dowel pin in it to keep the exhaust part from rotating, try that

good luck, this isnt the mike that I bought a 1.5 off of ebay is it???

Ok, so I assume I don't need heat at all?
That would make sense as to why the bolt clearence is screwing me..
