Post by: kd4yor on July 03, 2012, 03:46:30 pm: Does the US have an issue bring in an AAZ in the bed of a pick up? anyone had an engine seized for non EPA compliance? is this even an issue?

I've sold long blocks (no accessories) to americans before and just wrote on the receipt the VIN that the engine came from and that it was parts sold for xxx dollars.

I don't think it's going to be that easy. I think you will have problems getting anything newer than 25 years old over. Even then, don't rely on what anyone here tells you. Go check out the customs regs- they are out there on the internet.

Will do, thanks for the heads up. Problem is, not too many diesels on our side of the border for the prices I've seen. While my mechanical skills basically suck, I do have some eyesight on severe rust, which between the Mk3's reputation, along with Canadian winters will obviously knock out any car with these issues.The pics I have seen the cars look good, but we know we can't go by photos. As for the mechanical, Tyler, as usual stepped up and I trust his expertise, along with others (should I hear from them) whose posts I probably have read. I'll also check NYS DMV as well in the am when I leave work. Thanks again.

I would get the guide listed here and call the phone number at the bottom of the page before I handed over any cash. And check with your state tag bureau. You still may have some customs/duty issues- should plan for that too.

Seems like a recipie for disaster if you don't have all your ducks in a row. The rewards may be worth it, though as we have really been starved for usable diesels south of the border since the mid 80s.

The blocks had IP's, water pumps, oil pans full of oil, and they didn't even look. I would say if they are broken down that far you should be good. I bet if you even had the heads you could still come across. Still, asking questions would be the best bet.

Yes, I did. My apologies for the hijacking. But went to NYS DMV and she gave me the 'normal' forms. However, as someone posted about 'ducks in a row', I will check Federal sites to play it safe.
