Title: Blew my turbo feed line, help needed.
Post by: 8v-of-fury on June 27, 2012, 07:45:27 pm
1998 AHU TDI-M ko3 turbo

I'm currently sitting on the side of the highway, and I have lost ask of my oil pressure at the head.. mechanical gauge. My fire wall is coated with oil and I can see the trail of where I came to a stop with smoke just billowing from the hood. Something dumped most of my oil on the turbo and exhaust manifold...  I started the car, and it had a chance to warm up for the 5 to 7 minute drive to the highway, where I had to haul on it to merge. 35 second later I glance and see maybe 5 lbs at the head.. So I pull off immediately and shut her down. I am awaiting a tow truck so naturally I am out here trying to figure it out.

What do you think happened? Did my turbo go pop? If so what am I looking for?? Could it have been my oil supply line??

Oil line to turbo go pop or fail somehow?
oil supply line?

This is what I am hoping the best case is.. worst case hole in the block/turbo gone pop. :( If its not the line, I hope for turbo before block! LOL God I had the nicest tow truck dude too, that made it so much better. He was a VW lover.

I have a straight 12" exhaust system, so I can hear the turbo at all times. It never made another noise, and I never heard anything go BING-BANG-BOOM.. so this is looking good for feed line. Which may have looked rusty before I installed the engine?

All I know is that I am pissed! I just lost a $40 jug of oil all over highway 11.. fml. Which I was gonna postpone doing the change till next week too.

Hope he treated it gentle enough.  Some guys just hank it and crank it on and haul it like it is a piece of junk.  Just because it isn't running doesn't mean it is broken.

Yeah, he asked me straight up what was wrong. When I told him what I had done to the car and everything he is like, well since you know it better than me.. where are we hauling it on the flatbed from? So that was cool, he knew I knew my car top to bottom and respected that I wasn't a fool. Tomorrow after work, it will be getting a tearing in to.

If your exhaust wasn't so damn loud, you probably would have heard a funny Pshhhhht pshhhhht pshhhhhht as your oil pumped out on the road, I know I did when my oil cooler blew a seam.

Is the oil cap  on there? :P

LOL, I don't know if it would matter. The engine itself is pretty damn loud. Sucks cause I won't be able to look at it until after work today :(

Yes, oil cap is on there. The oil is all over the back of the block, so it is turbo related i fear.

Lol. Yeah, a stack straight down.

Here is some more info guys. My friend who's house I left last night said he could follow the trail of oil the 2 miles I made it. So it started leaking at startup. I think maybe I didn't let the turbo cool long enough?? I let it cool for a good few minutes, but could this have caused a seal to fail??

So i got under the car tonight, holy hell what a mess.

The turbo feed line broke right at the turbo! It broke right at the tightening nut. SO do you think I have room to get the flaring tool up in there and see if I can fix it? There is not a lot of room being that is the low mounted turbo with the EGR cooler right there, Why didn't I delete it when I had the engine out!? :(

If it failed once I wouldn't give it a second chance...when it is shorter and under more stress.

Alright so what size fittings are on either end? M10x1.0 at the filter? And at the turbo?

banjo bolt on filter.... and since line snapped at turbo = socket... so easy on that side...

Alright, so I have had no time to do anything with the car. Sucks.

It is a banjo bolt at the filter mount, and I'm assuming it is a flared end under that female line nut. How do I go about getting a replacement? Has anyone seen these still produced OEM?

It's a compression fitting at the turbo, not a flare.  5/16 steel ferule from McMaster will work with the stock nut/fitting.

Thank-you sir, no for the filter end.. Can i switch it up to be a normal brake line type fitting?

You can swap in one of the stock compression fittings from a spare flange/turbo, steal the compression nut from a spare line.  Alternatively I have tapped a non-turbo filter flange to npt and used an npt to 5/16 compression fitting.  For the tubing use 5/16 OD brake line.  Easy peasy.

You can flare too if you have to tool.  I've done that as well.  I have a '79 rabbit that I added a vnt 15 and I used an npt to 5/16 flare fitting on the non-turbo filter flange.  The npt is easier to use than the straight thread/metal washer as it will seal even if it is not perfectly perpendicular to the flange.

You the man. Thanks again. I took a quick look online and I found a line for $80, and a EGR block off kit for $35. From the same place as to save on shipping I would think this is a good route to go. Delete the EGR while I am in there eh.

I prefer to make my own but that's most often because they need to be custom anyway.  $20 in parts and an hour later it's done.  YMMV.

buy new line.......

the flare is a WELDED on piece of the line on my TDI feed line. its not just a simple flare. its a substantial piece of metal, quite a bit thicker than the tubing. a flare would be MUCH weaker, and i wouldnt even consider doing it..

All the stock oil supply line fittings I've seen on 1.6TD, AAZ or TDI have been compression or banjo.  Flare fittings are stronger than either.  Brass flare fittings are often rated to 300 psi with brass flare fittings rated from 2,000-4,000 psi.  Regardless, any of those will handle the meager 150 psi of oil that is too thick and too cold.

Ah well, I ordered a stock brand new line from IDParts.com, as well as an EGR delete kit. Shoulda done that when I had the engine out though... christ. lol
