I just acquired a 1990 diesel Golf. I knew the tranny had a leak so I began to top it up to see if I could see where it was coming from. I did a dumb thing. I added tranny fluid in the timing check hole and now understand I poured it all over the clutch.
What do I do now?

make sure it doesnt have HOLES in the case behind the flywheel..
a buddies car crapped a bearing, launched a ball THRU the case, and had an eternal leak..

There's a pretty good chance you will have to pull the tranny and get a new clutch. If you try and drive it there's a risk you'll ruin the flywheel and PP due to the slipping.

Bomb with brake cleaner, and spin dry with centripetal force.
Just don't push the clutch in, and clamping force will keep most of the oil out..

Unfortunately I did drive the car just off the driveway onto the street so I could get my other car and get to work. I hope I didn't screw up your recommendation totally. To be clear, spray brake cleaner down the timing hole while the engine is running but without the clutch being engaged?

hose the clutch/flywheel with brake cleen thru any hole/opening you can get to it easily thru..
try and get as much of the brake clean to run DOWN INTO the clutch. simply spraying down thru the timing hole wont hardly do anything. be sure to get as much brake clean IN the clutch as possible.. after you have rinsed it a little bit, then push the clutch in, and hold it, while hosing more brake clean on the clutch.. i would not advise you do that last bit unless YOU MOVED IT WITH OIL ON THE CLUTCH.. and it sounds like you did have oil on the clutch, and did move it..
i would also go under the car, pop the two 11mm bolts out of the lower portion of the bell housing, and open the inspection cover a bit. hose the pressure plate with cleener, turn engine a bit, hose more, turn, hose..
and since you already released the clutch with oil all over everything, you may have already oil soaked the clutch..
i still think you are going to have to pull the trans to fix whatever is wrong..

All good advice, but with too much doom and gloom, IMO. Unless a quart or more was poured in, the way the flywheel protects the disc in a VW, I think the odds are even that there's no damage. Mine would probably leak right out the bottom- the sealing plate is pretty wavy.

Even if it does slip, it will eventually burn off,... from a friend's experience not mine, ha.

It may also wreck the pressure plate and flywheel surface so they won't physically grab anymore as well.

If you take the clutch out you can use a propane torch and burn the oil off

It may.
But my friend's clutch grabbed nice after the trany fluid burnt off (hole in trany got it wet).
