Hey guys just a quik question, looking at buying a 1995 Golf 5 door with a 1,6 TD and was wondering what I might expect for a top speed. I'm sure someone here can tell me so thanks in advance.

depends on transmission gearing.
my rabbit with that motor does at least 170km/h but i have fairly long gearing.
-
As far as I know the car is bone stock but how would I go about finding out what gearing it has?
-
find the transmission code. on my car it was on a sticker by the spare tire well.
oh and by the way... you sure its not a 1.9L TD, or that its the original motor?
-
I'm almost positive the guy told me it was a 1,6TD, why should this car have a 1.9?
The Machanic who is selling it told me he rebuilt the engine about 80k ago and I have been told hes a very honest man.
-
^^ Because a 95 Golf TD should have a 1.9L not a 1.6L...
As for top speed... I guess it depends on how good of a condition the motor is in, and what u'r gearing is....
With my MKII I was able to do almost 170 km/h w/o a problem and could have gone more easy.... I've done 190-200 km/h in 90HP TDI powered VW's...
With an IDI, you might want to look into a few pump mods to help you get there a little quicker... the govenor mod will help you the most with u'r top speed, it made a huge difference on my and my buddies car

Mk3, 1995 , has a 1.9TD engine, if it's an 1.6, it's not the original engine.. It's easy to see if it's an 1.6 or 1.9.
You should have a 3.67 as R&P and an .71 or .75 as 5th gear..
Cheers,

Thanks guys I dont know why I had 1.6 in my head I know the car is original, and therefor a 1.9, and the engine only has 80k on a profesional rebuild. in the ideal world I would like to get at least 180kph out of the car (mainly because my friends civic shuts down at 170 and when I catch him I want to have a little extra) and from what you guys are telling me it doesent seem like coaxing that out of the car will be too much of a problem. Thanks for the info.

final....3.941

Do these professionals know about changing to a TDI crank sprocket?
might be worth having a look at the sprocket part number.
-
I would hope so but I will be sure check.
Any chance someone could get me that part number?
Any other important things I should check on the car, I'm young and this is only my second volks.
-
My A2 could go 70 MPH with a little more to go, and that's with a sheep in the intake, and (I'm assuming) a really old fuel filter.
:D
Gotta test it once I get the shift bushings done and the oil changed.
-
I was able to get my 1.6L 10k miles on the rebuild 91 ECO Jetta up to 100mph with no problems, that was running 12psi boost and with a pump mod from Giles and a custom 2.5 inch down pipe and exhaust system back through a flowmaster muffler. It had more left but I was afraid of getting caught.
-
My 1.9TD would do 160-170km/h stock. It will do better than 190 at present, but I was on Q-rated snow tires so I chickened out. Transmission has been changed to 0.71 5th and the motor has considerably more power than stock. It will pull the taller 5th gear well into the redline. (FWIW, my 1.9TD pulls just fine at 4500+ rpm)
-
Thats awsome guys just what I need to hear. Now dont get me wrong I dont go around racing all the time. I am just used to something a little faster then my 1.6 NA . I grew up driving snowmobiles and ridding motorcycles so my old 1.6 though it runs good when i get off my snowmobile(130hp) and get in my car (52hp) well you can imagine what its like.
-
Well before I got rid of the jetta (it was well modified) I was, "having some fun" with a WS6 firebird, and had the speedo completely burried, at 220km/h + (have no idea how acurate the gauge was) as well as my egt gauge at 1800 degree's  He was slowly moving away, but kept glancing back in shock to how close I was.
I know the feeling of a getting off a quick sled and into a slow car or just about any sub $100K sports car, and have it feel slow. I have a 2005 summit X 1000 (175hp at the track all 162"s of it) it is geared down and will still do 100mph in a foot of freash snow.
-
I'm in NB too... who's the mechanic you're buying from?
-
When I had my 1.6lTD with the 4S transmission (3.94 and .75) my maximum speed was 180km/h. The engine rev was near from 5000RPM.
With the CHD transmission and 1.9lTD engine, I can only tell you that my counter stops at 200  (3.67 and .75)
-
hmm over 200 eah? wicked
The car is at foreign auto service in dieppe and if one of you buy it il hunt you down steal the car and replace it with a honda when your not looking! nah just kidding i wouldent force a honda upon anyone.
Anyway keep the info comming, and thanks again to all who have put in there two cents.

oops sorry accidentaly hit the submit thing twice so ignore this box
-
i had a moded 1.6 hit the trip reset button so that makes more then one of us i would say around 225 ish. (engine screaming very deep in the redline) Im way to evil :D
-
If all it takes is 225 in a car to make you evil i must be one bad A$$ kid top-ed out my parents volvo at 260 couple nights ago, Man what a rush,
Bu siriously 225 in a non tdi diesel is very impressive and more then i thought possible out of a 1,6. might I ask just how modded it was?
-
260kph? Good grief. Anything over 180 or so is enough enough to get you arrested and charged with criminal neligence if you got caught (considering the highest speed limit here is 120 (75mph). Certainly hope that was on a closed track.
-
how about all 4 wheels off the ground at 190? :)
-
my 1.6 had an intercooler pump mods and running 26 psi on the stock turbo. If i could go any faster i would. If i got my hands on that new bugatti that does 418 k/mh I would try it

From what I saw... the highest speed limit in canada is 110km/h.... and I don't think he was on a close track. The canadian laws are not as severe as they are in the US... :( he would have lost his license and pay something like 1500$.

60km/h over the speed limit in canada is "excesive" and depending on province is about $500 ticket +/- $50 depending on province and an automatic court apperance.
I had one in Northern, B.C. where the speed limit was 90km/h and i was going about 150km/h on a straight flat highway in the summer, I had been traveling at that speed for about 30min and had not seen another car yet, shortly after I was overtaken by a pickup that must have been doing 180km/h 20 min later I saw a car on the edge of the road and started to slow done to see if they had broken down (it is very remote up there and you always stop and check to see if people are okay) and as I got close an officer walked into the middle of the road and waved me to the sholder and proceeded to give me the ticket.
As a side note, at the court appearance I had it overturned.
Kinda off the subject but there are times when I feel it is "resonable" to travel at speeds that are deemed "excessive" by the law.

Agreed. The law is based on a dry road, and "average" cars and "average" drivers. On a flat, dry, straight interstate, with a good driver in a new TDI, 100mph is quite safe and reasonable and I have done that on road trips. In my old subaru, 100mph would never be safe no matter what the conditions or the driver's experience -- the car would disintegrate. And I know someone who managed to put a TDI jetta into a 360 degree spin on a flat dry highway, while barely over the speed limit. Luckily it had a low enough center of gravity to skid instead of flipping. And I have also been on roads where 25mph was unsafe and unreasonable even with four studded snow tires and lots of experience driving on snow (and all the bad drivers see the 55mph signs and hit the accelerator in order pass me before sliding into the ditch). So many variables that go into solving the physics problem, but only one "legal" answer to it regardless of the inputs.
-
An O2A from a TDI Jetta would be a good fit and has gearing that could get you pretty fast with enough power.

it is ONLY 500$ if the policeman only gives you a speed ticket, but you can also be charge with dangerous driving (don't know how to traduce it in english  ) .
Someone I know had a 1500$ ticket this way. 160km/h in a 50km/h zone. It is like going 220 in a 110 zone.
sorry if it's off the subject but I though it was important to bring it here since you were talking about top speed.

it's hard to get cheap insurance when ur 17 i have pretty much every discount i can get and i still pay over 1500 a year. blah
-
yeah insurance isent cheap when your young, I'm 18 and i also pay 1500 a year. I think it may be partialy because of drivers like me who have a heavy right foot.
-
My mom is primary owner on my car.
Also, I'm not a true driver yet.
Therefore, insurance is damn cheap.
-
FWIW, some people over at TDIClub have said that the T in TDI has made them pay more in insurance.
Guess the insurance companies don't care for turbos. :P

I pay as much for my rabbit as for my truck, which is 4wd, weighs almost twice as much, and has a turbo. But the rabbit comes up as a GTI in their computer, so I guess they think I'm racing it around (yeah! with all 52 hp). Really none of them are bad, as I've passed the 25 mark. I hear it goes down again at 50, but that'll be a while.

so far ive been lucky and stayed out of accidents, accept for one where some hill billy in the school parking lot back into my car while 4 people were yelling and telling him to stop. i was so pissed. my effing 2 door jetta, it had such a straight body.... then he tried to tell his insurance it was my fault with some dumb bs story... anyway.
