Morning. My car just died on me a block and a half from my shop. I need help or I'm sleeping in the store tonight.
On Saturday morning On my way into ottawa the car was dieing and then after a second or two it would come back. Basically there appeared to be no fuel. I figured I had some bad fuel and it had just gotten much colder than normal. I put in some conditioner and it still did it. I filled up from half and the problem went away eventually. A day later more conditioner - the problem persists. This morning it did it most of the way during my 1 hr commute. I purchased a new fuel filter thinking that was the culprit but it died before I could install it. Now it won't start at all. I installed the new filter to no avail. I am burping diesel cause wanted to confirm there was actually fuel entering the filter. There is. The little plastic piece that fits in the filter on the return line separated in half this morning but snaps back tgether so I doubt that's it. Anybody??????

you're getting fuel to the filter, but are you getting fuel to the injectors? try cracking some injector connections to see.
filter would have been my first guess too.

That's exactly what I'm going to try if I can get one of the girls to come in a cover me. I've also put in a call to get some diesel fuel so I can properly prime the filter. There's no diesel Downtown ottawa.

If there's no fuel at the lines are we talking pump?

pump, blockage in a line, or no 12v signal to stop solenoid. AFAIK that's pretty much it...

There's no blokage in the line before the filter. My burps can attest to that.
My father in law in on his way down with some diesel. I'm going to close the shop and try to get it hear by pushing it at least. Where do I check the 12V signal for the stop solenoid?

AFAIK = As Far As I Know
If this were a TDI, I'd be screaming "RELAY ONE OH NINE!"
But it's not.
As for the stop solenoid... here (http://ep0niks.ctech.ca/vw/eva2/FU02/ch5.5.5.html) is the check procedure.

The fuel solinoid is the only wire that goes to the injection pump. It should have 12V when the key is on.

And so it was the 12V line. The connection was loose for some reason and like all the wiring on this car that I am slowly replacing it isn't in great shape. I cleaned up the connection, refit, turned the key and baboom. She fired up. I should mention that I also primed the fuel filter that I didn't need. My clue was there was no puffing of smoke as I tried to start it and there was fuel at the lines when I cracked them. Thanks guys!

P.S I will be replacing this wire as it it becoming brittle. It seems to go to the fire wall. What does it connect to?

goes to the back of the fusebox i think, maybe the ignition switch. never had that apart. might be time to buy a bentley (wiring diagrams) if you're digging into wiring.

Should eventually go to the ignition switch, possibly through the fusebox on the way. I wired mine to the ignition switch, to the wire that's hot when it's in the run and start positions.

I'm still searching for a Bentley. Someone PM'd me a couple weeks back and told me that a store in ottawa west had them. I called. The clerk told me they were out and they didn't know when they would have more in. Noone seems to carry them the big guys say "we'll order it" "It should be in in 4-6 weeks". I'd rather spend my money at a local independant shop. They can't just order one book though. So I wait patiently. I've never owned a car this long with out buying a manual. If anyone sees one in their travels between MTL and Ottawa send me a note.

If you have no manual at all, the Chiltons isn't bad. I picked mine up at the local parts store for $19. Certainly no replacement for the Bently or factory service manual, but enough to do basic stuff, and they have pretty good wiring diagrams (if confusing about exactly which car they apply to sometimes).

Bentleys appear on eBay pretty frequently. You can set it up so eBay e-mails you when one gets listed.

i've got them off ebay, free with cars... and in a pinch, the dealer has them :)
