Title: ALH TDI Turbo in an IDI
Post by: ein bora on May 08, 2012, 07:42:01 am
I have an opportunity to buy a relatively new ALH TDI turbo with manifold and I'm thinking about installing it in my 1.9 IDI. It's vacuum operated so I'm thinking it's a good thing as I will be able to adjust the boost, so other than a manual boost controller is there anything else that I will need to get or do to make it work?
Any help appreciated. Thanks.

You're talking about a vnt, right?
Making a manual vane controller for a vnt that will function like the original system is a little more complicated than it would first seem.
Other than the vane control system, just the usual exhaust fab work (these guys have the outlet flange-->  http://www.mandrel-bends.com/catalog/flanges-custom-waterjet-cutting-36/turbo-flanges-62/vnt-15-turbo-flange-1-2-mild-steel-2445.html  ); oil supply and drain. Oh, and you'll need to block off or weld the EGR port closed. That should be it.

What turbo will it be replacing? Or are you adding on to an n/a motor?
