Title: Conflicting Info: Oil pump - Turbo same as N/A?
Post by: Angry Tape on July 29, 2004, 08:23:46 am
The oil pressure is a little low in my freshley rebuilt TD and im wondering if it could be due to the oil pump.  I put a N/A pump from my 86 golf diesel in cause it had only 25K miles on it.  According to ETKA they use the same one.  Now im coming accross sites (such as www.1stvwparts.com) saying that the Turbo Diesel uses a different one. Anyone know for sure?  If they're the same...is there an upgraded pump that can be put in or should I just live with the low oil pressure?

Turbo and NA oil pumps appear to be the same in Etka, but hydraulic/sold lifter pumps are different. Was your golf a solid lifter motor? If so, that could be the trouble.

My TD is a solid lifter motor.  Its a CY block out of an 83 Jetta.  My GOlf motor was a hydro lifter motor.  I figured if anything it would give higher oil pressure.

Indeed... How low is your oil pressure and where are you measuring it?

Its about 12psi at idle warmed up and about 30-35psi driving around.  ALso...im still breaking the motor in (mobil 10W-40 engine oil) and probably a lot of assembely lube in the oil. I planned on switching to a 15W-40 weight for the summer and switching to something thinner for the winter.

Trust ETKA.

A solid lifter TD motor should get an oil pump with 30mm gear depth.  A hydraulic lifter TD motor should get a bigger pump (I think 36mm gear depth?)

A 12mm headbolt 1.6lNA gets the same 30mm gear depth pump as well.

Earlier VW Diesels, including the 1.5lDs and possibly the early 11mm headbolt 1.6lNAs got smaller pumps.

There is a lot of misleading info published on the net, even in Bentley manual, regarding differences of the NA motors vs the TDs.  Although they apply to the original 1.5lD or early 11mm headbolt 1.6lNA, many of these TD "improvements" were integrated into the latest 1.6lNA 12mm headbolt design during 1981.

maybe you have 'hyd' engine 'low oil pressure syndrome' (like me)

are you checking pressure at the rear of head?

I have found (experience only) that my Hyd engines (including 2 brand new 1.9's) get similar (or worse!) oil pressure to your's when sensor is tapped from head (I haven't tried taking at filter housing)  I have tried elect. and mech gauges  (equally disappointing)

Yet my fresh 1.6 mechanical's  push 80psi hot!

theory (only my own)  Hyd pumps and galley's = Hi volume, low pressure

a bit unnerving, so I intend to add sensor to filter housing and a switch at my gauge so I can check each.

My pressure is taken from the filter housing.  So what do you guys think?  Should I change out the pump for a new one?
