Title: Mechanical head.
Post by: One_punchmachinegun on March 28, 2012, 05:42:20 pm
What would happen if i threw a 1.9 headgasket upgrade on a mechanical head?  :-\

For one thing you would have a hole in the gasket that would stick out of the head because it's a straight surface at that part of a mechanical head.

yeah, i figured that, but what kind of complications would that cause, couldnt that be fabbed to work?
Has anyone done this upgrade to the mechanical head? ???

You would have a 1.9 headgasket on a mechanical head  :P

But yes there are extra holes in the 1.9 hg.  The smaller ones around the cylinders for cooling and the second oil passage. Wait that's if your putting it on a 1.6. Are there mechanical 1.9s I dunno lol

In any case I've read somewhere that the oil passage hole can be "patched"

i read a thread on vwvortex that mechanical engines are not compatible.
http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?3099455-Diesel-Turbo-Diesel-headgasket-upgrade-(1.9TD-headgasket)
So im a little sceptical.

And to clear it up, yes a 1.6 engine. ;D

He states that it's not suitable but he didn't say not possible.

As well things to consider, I've been told this several times by glegor is that your "mating surfaces should be almost perfect as the MLS hg may not seal as well as the fiber hg

I swear I read somewhere that this has been done.  Perhaps it was a different scenario

Ok, i will try. LOL see what happens. Thank you for your input Trips_B. IF anyone know of information that could be useful let me know. Thanks

I did it on my build. I had 0 problems but I only posted 40,000 miles before the precup destroyed the engine. All mechanical block and head with the 1 notch aaz gasket. In my sig there below here is my build thread, but most of the pics are for some reason don't work anymore. Let me know if you need specifics and I will repost.

Why do you want to do this?
There is zero benefit to a stock or mildly modified engine and you end up with what could be a fussier head gasket, unless you also resurface the head and deck to the finer surface finish required for a MLS gasket.

i plan on boosting quite a bit. And i have heard that this is a very good upgrade if you plan on boosting more.

Ah, the information that was needed in the first thread for anyone to give an accurate answer :) How much boost??

Just buy an MLS gasket that's made for the 1.6TD mech head: http://gasketstogoblog.com/2010/02/06/mls-gasket-for-1985-vw-1-6-l-turbo/

^I see... why isnt this promoted more?
For the boost i was thinking 20-25psi daily. ::) figuring thats a good amout, safe and gives a little more.

yup, very important to make sure your decks are in VERY good shape.. like, as close to freshly milled as possible..

fiber gaskets will seal on far from perfect surfaces, metal gaskets like things nice n flat..

and yes, this has been done THOUSANDS of times.. it works just fine, but its far from a bolt on upgrade.. theres an oil passage in the gasket that halfways lines up with a water passage.. on the AAZ, theres 2 oil drains on the front of the head, a big center located one, and a small one off to the side, right behind the injection pump.

well, on the hydro blocks, this gasket is a BOLT ON upgrade, but on the mechanical blocks, you must figure out a way to block off the oil passage in the gasket, otherwise you will NEVER be able to keep coolant in the engine.. most people cut a piece of oil filler cap gasket, and lay it in the hole in the gasket, and then torque it down..

and if your only worried about 25psi boost, then dont even bother with this gasket. the fiber gasket is more forgiving, and lasts JUST FINE @ 25psi...

OK thank you, where does boost get dangerous with the fiber gasket?

with my 1.5D, the head gasket lasted longer than the block.. ive ran 30+psi to a fiber gasket LOTS of times..

idk how far you can actually take a fiber head gasket.. but i know its farther than i was comfortable running my engine..

ive never had the need to run metal gaskets.. but, im going compounds soon, so we will see how that goes!
