Title: mk 2 radiator fit in mk1?
Post by: Krisverde on March 17, 2012, 07:58:02 am
Found someone that is parting out a 1985 golf and has a newer radiator.  Will this radiator fit in my 81 jetta?

Well anything is possible...

If it's the big radiator, well, they are mounted differently, the mk1 is straight and the mk2 is at an angle and the nipples are different... You might want to look at this: http://www.vwdiesel.net/forum/index.php?topic=28329.0 (http://www.vwdiesel.net/forum/index.php?topic=28329.0)

if its a SMALL non a/c radiator, it will fit in a rabbit no problem..

but, the early mk1 radiators mount differently to the car.

the mk1 radiator bolts in, and the mk2 radiator has pins and locating holes..

if the rabbit were an 84, the rad from the 85 would work..

83 and older, they have bolt in rubber isolators, and the bottom of the rad tanks must have the brackets..

ITS NOT GONNA WORK..

well, the only rabbit ive ever seen with pins, are 84s..

you could be correct, but i swear the 83 rabbit my grandpa has, is bolted, and not pinned.. i KNOW FOR A FACT that his 83 caddy radiator is bolted in with rubber isolators, and the little wire clip on top of the fan shroud..

It's not difficult to fab up some radiator mounts or a radiator mounting solution, I did it. It's just a matter of how much time you want to spend and if anything is gained.

About all Mk2 AC radiators are gonna be way too wide for your 81 Jet.
No harm in taking measurements to see for sure tho.

I'd bet against it being an easy swap -
but i've never seen a Non-AC Mk2 to even know what their radiators are like as far as width.

in other matters - my 81 Truck has pins/grommets on lower mounts.
not comparing it to a German built Jetta in any form - just adding to other semi-topic.

I've never actually seen one on a diesel, around here everyone runs the a/c radiators even if they don't have an a/c car mk1 or mk2, myself included, on a factory no-AC car...
