I've noticed mine making a similar noise. Haven't spent time to try and figure it out yet though.

That's the sound tensioners make when they're yelling at you.

if you ran the belt too tight for too long, then the tensioner is probably wiped out, and if the tensioner seizes up, your timing belt breaks, and then your head needs a rebuild, or replace...

that sound like fun? then fix the noise..

I have a bit different of a noise.. it was more like a wub, wub, wub, wub.. like rubber on metal I guess. Now it's more of a metal on metal.. not loud, but there..

Took off my upper timing cover to check it out today.. brand new continental tbelt, worn on the sides down to the metal brading in two spots. I can see the sound happens as those spots go into the tensioner. Getting a new tensioner today. But any ideas on why only two spots of the belt would have been rubbing and wearing? Is the timing belt still safe to run?

Your video still looks terrible, the belt is trying to ride off the pulley and its stopping because of the edge on the tensioner.

I got my jetta like that a year and a half ago and it had half a timing belt!  Crapped myself when I got it home, it drove fine on the way home :)

When I first searched for why it was happening, I thought it was a bad adjustment of the brackets that hold the ip.  But I couldn't adjust it away with a new timing belt/tensioner and the same thing was starting to happen.  Starts out rubbing, let it keep going and it slowly grinds the belt down.

What mine actually ended up being was the mainshaft bushings on the pump were so oval shaped that you could grab the pulley and rock it side to side with your hands.  I wasn't able to get a straight edge across the pulleys.

Ended up going with a spec'd bottom end of another pump and slapped my turbo bits on it and was amazed at the difference.  Then it took me a handfull of tries to get it perfect but then I was able to adjust where the ip sits and tracks on the belt.  Now its still riding down the middle almost 20,000 miles later.  No funky noises like that or belt shavings, etc.

If I was you I would investigate this and fix it now.  Maybe you will be lucky and your ip bracket is just out of adjustment.

I don't know where mine is coming from, replaced the tensioner in case that was the problem. Sounds like more of an internal rubbing if that makes sense.. maybe it is the IP bracket.. or maybe it's the water pump? How does the WP sound when starting to fail?

Take a 3' bit of hose stick one end in your ear and stick the other end around the pulleys you think are making noise.  You'll know what is is pretty quick.

Also look for metal shavings.  My cam sprocket rubs on the shield and makes shavings.
