Title: Wanted - 12mm 1.6 block w/ usable standard bore.
Post by: Jetmugg on February 21, 2012, 03:03:05 pm
The title pretty much says it - I'm looking for a 12mm 1.6 Diesel block with good, usable standard bores.  I need to put a 1.5L rotating assembly into such a block.  I figure that it might be easier to find a standard bore block than it is to find oversized 1.5L pistons, so that's the approach I'm planning right now.

I'm located in MO, but willing to travel a little bit if you have a good 12mm standard bore block.

I'm not in a super hurry - I just want to find the best block I can get my hands on for a reasonable price.

I do have some other 1.6 and 1.5 short blocks, heads, and a pump or two that I could use as trading fodder if you are interested.

Thanks for looking,

Steve M.

LOL.. a turbo block you may find.. the bores wore less in them due to the piston squirter... but hell in the 90s to find a "clean" 1.6na bore... most had lip at the top from upper ring wear..

chances are you will have to get the block sleved.. and bore is cheaper.. LOL..

Alternatively, I would be happy to find a complete set of 1mm oversized 1.5L diesel pistons.

A standard bore turbo block would work also.

Which request will give you the bigger chuckle?  I'm just looking for parts that will work for my needs.

With respect to sleeving and boring, that's certainly a possibility, but not the preferred path.  Do you have any firsthand experience with sleeving and boring a block back to standard size?

whats wrong with getting a worn stock bore block, and getting a set of .5mm o/s 1.5 pistons?

ive only seen 2 sets of 1mm o/s pistons for a 1.5 in my entire life..

but .5mm o/s, hell, there not rare at all, i have 3 sets personally..

The .5mm O/S pistons are out there, yes.  They are semi-rare, but not unobtainable. That's definitely an option, and may end up being my best option in terms of $$$ and availability.   I'm trying for the path of least $$$ spent to get where I want to go.  If that means paying more for a good standard 12mm block (if I can find one), either NA or TD, then I'd be happy to go that way.

If it means finding a block that will take a .5mm O/S bore, then spending more for the O/S 1.5L pistons and rings, then that's the way it will play out.

I'm trying to keep my options open, while being ready to jump when the right deal comes along.  I'd prefer to have a block to start with.

R.O.R. - Are you interested in selling a set of .5mm O/S pistons and rings?

What's a fair price for a NOS set of original German Mahle turbo 1.5l pistons, 1mm oversize of course?

I checked ebay yesterday - a set of NOS Mahle 1mm O/S 1.5 pistons recently sold for $225.

If you have a set, I'd be happy to pay that price.

I would be happy to pay that price too, that's cheaper than I paid for my set years ago.  I looked on ebay and all I found was 1.5l  single pistons without rings even for $199+shipping each.  Do ypu have a link or seller, I would like to get another spare set if available.

Here's a link to the ones that recently sold.  Are these the same pistons (Mahle part # and all) that you have?

http://www.ebay.com/csc/i.html?_sacat=See-All-Categories&_from=R40&_nkw=vw+diesel+1.5+pistons&LH_Complete=1&rt=nc

I also saw the guy that is trying to get $199 for a single piston.  Asking and getting are 2 different things.  I don't think many folks are going to pay $200 for a single oversized piston.

I can't tell you if they are the same or not...mine are in a blue box but hell I don't know if that makes a diff.   It's been awhile since my last project and from memory they where 1.5l turbo diesel pistons in 1mm or .040 over, Mahle German made...not Brazil.  Same bore as 1.6 but different wrist pin diameter.  Anyway, that was a good deal though at any rate and I couldn't sell mine that cheap as I paid a bit more for mine originally when I mistaked them for 1.6 turbo pistons-  .040 over.  Anyway that doesn't help you much and I sound like a real d@#*head huh?  send me a pm with your phone # and let me think on it.  I'd much rather talk on the phone....it took me 15 minutes just to type this much!

Are you looking for hydraulic block correct? IIRC you are LSR guy and we talked before.

More for other posters than OP as I don't have a hydro block.

I am the LSR guy, but at this point, I'm still not sure whether a hydraulic or mechanical block would be the better choice.  I think it would probably work either way for me.  Some say that the mechanical setups can make more power for a given rpm, and may be able to spin more rpms without problems.  However, if I wanted to do a "Franken" setup, then the hydro would be an easier setup.

Do you have any good blocks, TheMan?
