When I read your comment on the Ming Blue Cabby on the other post I thought, he likes it cuz it is his same color scheme.  But you did mention it was a diesel too.

Color had little to do with it actually. I like the uniqueness (minus the BBS wheels, of course). It would be a sweet ride.

Stop making us Jealous!

So shiny--  I looked at mine today as I had a hose in hand washing down the greenhouse and thought, the bunny needs this too.  Sun went down to fast or I was to slow reassembling the greenhouse.

Tomorrow they say rain.  Could wash but no waxing then.

I added them when I did the body last winter. It's one of the best changes I've made.

Do you plan for a redo of the hood pad?  Or substitute some other form of sound deadening?

I think my big black pad it about as soaked in engine junk as I care to see it.  Touch it and you come away very black and gooey.

Yes, I just picked up a good pad this winter. It will be cleaned, then coated with rubberized undercoating. I found this worked well in the past, and made the pad easy to clean in the future.

What do you use to clean it?  I might be able to salvage mine and then coat it.  Can you wash it at a car wash with a pressure washer?  Or just plain old soap and water with a scrub brush?

Mine is in great shape but is ever so nasty to touch.  Glad I wear a cap when I bump my head at times trying to get a look down the back of the engine.

I use a product called Spray 9. Spray it about 6 times over a period of a couple of hours, then use a pressure wash at the coin'op carwash. Cleans up just like new. :D

What brand/ product number/ length gas lift supports did you use?  Did you build in reinforcement for them or just screw them into the sheet metal?

looks like its just rear hatch struts, fitted to the hood.. believe im going to be doing this conversion rather soon. looks quite easy.

woah, the ebay kit is 20 bucks.. kinda hard to mess around finding parts to do it, when the whole kit is 20 bucks..

I've had ol' Rattle & Haul now for 6 years and we've had some fun smokin the Honduhs locally. First to go was the tired old 1.6TD to be replaced by a bored, balanced, ported AAZ with a T3 turbo (22 psi), Giles pump and BIG exhaust. Last year we stripped the body down to bare metal and refinished it completely. Maybe this winter an 02A. Will these projects ever end?
Enjoy.

My truck is stock underneath with the exception of KYB gas shocks and a Scirocco "K" Brace. These trucks came on 13" wheels and I added the 14" Mk 2 rims and 185-65x14 Michelin tires. I hope this helps.

Can't believe I forgot seeing this over at the 152.  Still going strong obviously?  Keep killing those Hondas; hopefully I'll be doing the same before the year's out.

Any I agree with you that the 5 cyl is nice; makes a noise reminiscent of the 80's Audis (for obvious reasons), just wish it's power band woke it up a little lower than the ~2800 it seems to start to REALLY pull at.  Now if we could only get the newer 2.5 TD's . . .

you drive the 150hp 2.5, or the later model 170hp version? the 150hp engine was a belt timed engine, the 170hp is chain timed.

the one i have access to, is the 170hp version.. it will roast the tires on dry pavement from a dead stop, just mash the throttle.

sounds JUST LIKE an older Audi.. thats my FAVORITE part.. usually, when im driving the car in town, its in manual mode (engine braking, stop n go, whatever) but the freeway gets full automatic..

damn the injectors are NOISY tho..

still needs the ECU re-flashed to de-activate SAI.. damn, the 2.5s have the noisiest SAI i have ever heard..

im amazed at how long the oil stays CLEAN on these engines.. my buddies car, the oil still isnt black, even at the change interval..

it does not use oil either.. could be that it only has 30k miles on it tho!

they really are a blast to drive for a non-performance oriented drivetrain.. i even enjoyed the 6spd auto trans, and i HATE slushomatics..

Was actually talking about the 170 hp version, but I can't give WOT @ take-off as these are usually customers cars I'm test driving.  So my findings are based off of rolling starts, which is why I say below 2800 feels laggy.  Do agree about the injectors and SAI; when they start up cold the combination of the two makes the engine sound like it's grinding rocks!

yup, sure does.. you can get the ecu re-flashed with a lower high idle, and quieter SAI function..

the 2.5 DEFINITELY PULLS before 2800..

the one i drive, is a friends car, and im the mechanic, so if i break it, i fix it. he lets me drive it however i feel fit, as long as it makes me smile..

another thing about the mk5s, is they handle AMAZING! even a base model jetta, great suspension!

Oh now we get the true story.  First time I have heard of that.  In the housing arena they put that sale contingent on sale of house B.  This is new to me, sale dependant on finding sweet ride replacement vehicle.  What is next?

Care for the UniMog instead of a Jetta.  The backhoe option could be useful in heavy traffic or for contracting out as a second job.  We all need one of those right?

Nah, I'm a little "mature" for that sort of thing, but I do love to stress the metal and paint black soot-stripes on the side of Honduhs.

Because of my "stressing the metal", I've found that this combo will shove the balls into the axle (CV joint) cages to the point that axles start making ominous clicking sounds after only a few months. I guess I've gotta change the axles to 100mm and see if I can get some better joints. And whoever said diesels were trouble free..... ::)

what brand is on there now, most people seem to have good luck with napa remans, i always have.  i've heard alot of people say also the 100mms don't seem to be any stronger.  vegeta gti has the 450whp mk1 gli 1.8t and when he breaks axles hes been snapping the splined portion off the outter cv haha!!!.

Cool, a friend does that on a AAZ Rocco boosted to 45 psi, but I always thought the slicks were the killer. Mine spins down low, but the torque at high speeds is brutal. I have had no  luck with Empi axles and am trying NAPA remans now. So far so good.

Man cave indeed.  Not a window or a skylight installed.  Novel wrap for a novel truck.

Best get the siding on quick, winter is coming, winter is coming.

Question, is it insulated too?

Yes indeed. All nicely insulated and vapor barriered. The siding goes on today.

I did a little engine compartment cleanup this weekend. It is a daily driver, but I like it clean too. I still have a fuel smell around the pump. I suspect a banjo fitting. Anyone have any creative ideas for the hard plastic line from the filter to the pump?

Can Relate to that old timer!  I do have my 7 watt moments, then the light goes back out.

Simple things for Simple minds.

Good you got it to go.  I have Master Cylinder and Passenger Axle to play with this weekend.

Good luck on the fiddling, and thanks again for the idea. I was just revelling in the torque this morning on the way to work. I came off the harbour bridge onto a BARE street (almost unheard of) and, since it was damp, stuck my foot into it in second gear. It spun both all the way through second, and all the way through third. I LOVE TORQUE !!!

Even more depressing.  First the truck we want, then a new garage to work on it in and now a new tool bench?  Come on, you're killing me with envy.

I had to get out the coveralls last weekend to stay dry enough and warm enough to work on the Rabbit.  Also had to keep the tool box on the porch with the lid closed to keep the tools dry.  Oh yeah, tis winter again.

Yes, but you're not 65 years old. Give it time, it will come.  ;)

I am closer than you think.  Not sure where to put a garage around here.  PO of the house converted it to living area.  I threatened to put it back and the wife gave me "the look"  you know the one.  I even offered to keep the space open to the living room so she could see that I was in there working hard and that didn't buy me any points either.

How about we send you a couple of ours just so you don't run out of things to do this winter.  I hear it is going to be a long one this year.

You know, I've been hearing that. I've also been thinking that a Mk 1 Jetta coupe with a new "Clean Diesel" TDI would be a really nice winter project.  8)
