Guys,
I have a good 1V engine that i'm going to take down this week.
It came from a 1991 Jetta and will be going into a 1991 Mk2 GTi. I have seen a lot of images of a very nice shade of green being used for the 1.6 engines.
My block is almost covered in rust, but just down at the dipstick there is green paint, yet on the back of the engine behind the engine mount, there is what looks like black paint, could be burnt on oil though.
I would very much like to do it green if that is what was original on a 1991 Jetta. If it wasnt green originally, then it will be done black.
Could someone give me a quick post on when the green block was used, or if used at all. Did someone just take a notion for this colour and it stuck ?
Looks nice, and makes a change from the black, but if it isnt original, or specific to that year, then i'd want to use black.
Look forward to any info.
Regards, Matt

I have one all green and one that is black except it has a green stripe painted on the side about where the intermed. shaft is. It looks funny.

all the un painted diesel blocks i have seen are a nice green and i love it!

Any idea what year they come from the factory like this, or is the green you see on unpainted blocks some type of fungus ? thats what the bit on my 1V looks like !
Any info on its factory use would be appreciated.
Thanks, Matt

My '81 Rabbit block looked black when I got it. After pulling the engine and cleaning it all up, it was a nice diesel green. I have a 1.6TD motor that I am rebuilding, and it has a black block, looks to be original paint. It's an '83 or '84.

my dad has a n/a diesel block out in our garage and it has a nice coat of oil which seems to have kept the paint in very nice shape, i sprayed some wd40 on it to thin it out and underneath the green paint was very nice. another turbo diesel i have seen which i know is all original from 1985 has a very green block, and i can find green spots on my n/a diesel block in my car. so i would assume green is the color it should be...

does anyone know the paint code or roughly a color? I have seen a few and im going to paint mine (john deere green) or red like my car

Hey guys,
My '81 pickup had a rebuilt 1.6 when I bought it that was the nice vw green color. I believe it was rebuilt in canada and guessing that it was maybe painted then. Sorry no paint code. Garry over on the pickup forum repainted his block Buick Green which isn't an exact match but pretty close and looks very nice.
A picture of it here:

Hope this helps.

I think I read using Detroit Diesel green adds 15hp, but makes it quite a bit noisier :P

i am thinking that the detroit diesel color will give me extra power but i will already have "to much POWER" :P I think its to light and the buick green is to dark i was thinking like a 69 challenger green or lime green or a british racing green they all seem to be very close to factory.

It could also cause some oil leaks... :D

My block is dark green -- the guy I bought it from may have painted it, but since nothing else on the engine was repainted, I suspect not. John deere green is a very close match (the rest of my car is john deere green)

Guys,
Where on earth do I start now ! John Deere green is a mile off the paint on the block in the picture below. I like this colour. I saved this picture about a year ago, I cant remember who's it is, I'm sure the proud owner will let us know, it was from this forum.

In that case the image was probably the one from the second post on this thread ( ), and is indeed Detroit Diesel green.

That was the thread that I was remembering when I posted above actually.

I painted one John Deere green:

I was looking at a book of engine colors at my local auto parts store and thought the AMC green was close to the scraps of green I've seen on VW diesel blocks.
