For the record, I did not crash that golf. I bought it that way not running for $200. took the motor and sat on it for years for my 84.

I drove the gold car all last summer, my true introduction to diesels. got that car for $100 out of a barn that it sat in for 6+ years. changed the oil and coolant and drove the hell out of it :)

the red mk1 is my brothers jetta, and we got the 92 red jetta on trade for the 98 shell. which i used the 92 TD motor for my bros diesel swap. then scrapped the 92.. and came out even on the money I used to buy the 98! lmao which i got not running for $400. Got it running drove it a few months then started tearing it down. kept the motor, trans and all the electrical stuff. After that i traded the interior from the shell to someone else for a running 84 diesel motor and trans.

quite the awesome time ive had learning volkswagens. NOW IM FREAKIN' PRO! lmao

Omg, WD.. you would not believe it if I told you.. it was super cold last winter here.. and didnt snow that much lol.

HOWEVER! It was -25C when those two snowy pictures showing the 6 dubs at once was taken.. hence the girl with the jacket done right up lol.. and me laying on the ground with 5.. or maybe even 6 layers of clothing on!! LMAO

Only good thing about snow and coveralls is that if you use the really gooey oily ones on the outside you can slide on your back real good to get under the car.  Oh, watch that tranny there.  Yeah and the cross member too.

I hate working in the snow.  But all this rain isn't any better.  Given enough cold snow is a bit better as it doesn't soak in as much.

haha, when my two other buddies come over 84 rabbit diesel and 82 jetta 1.7 CIS there is 5 a1's in the driveway lol.

Sadly I am getting rid of the gold 81.. I haven't the ability to keep it. I tried to sell it as a complete shell.. but no bites. So one more a1 is getting crushed. :(

Today the 84 got a AHU TDI  heart transplant :)!

Tomorrow I will get it running, and be driving it. Gotta love 8hr full engine swaps :)

So really when you are elbows deep in an engine swap of this caliber, you do not have time to take pictures.. I only have these couple pictures to do anything with the actual swap.. Gasser mk1 passenger mount, new water pump and rear main. 200k km 210mm flywheel, hand freshened lol. Brand new 210mm sachs OEM clutch kit. To top of the tranny stuff a 1986 mk2 ACN transmission.

The night before I did the swap I drove my daily driver to the shop and hauled my pump off it and got a ride home with my brother. That night I dismantled my already franken-pump and made it an m-tdi one. It was a late 80's TD pump body, with a 91 NA lid on it. Of course fully shimmed governor and the fuel turned up as physically as high as it could go.. Any more and the idle got too high. I had the idle screws backed all the way out, and the throttle lever jumped back a spline so that more fuel screw could be turned in. I think even with the fully shimmed governor I was something like 3-4 full turns in from stock. Whhooooa! she flew for a non turbo lol. Sitting on my core support ready to go on the motor is a 1.6 TD pump body, with all the 1.9 AHU TDI internals, 1.6 lid and a mad whack boost pin by member 410 on here.

I drove it like this for about a month, and then when the weather got nice I decided to tear back in to it.. PLUS my modified throttle lever had been finished (also by member 410 on here) and was ready to be installed! Beside a stock one on the right, you can see that the ball end had been extended and the pivot hole in the side of the lever had been changed. Plus a few other key modifications like removing height from the lever so it would not hit the lid seeing as how it was being mounted sitting higher in the pump now. Modification to the LDA arm inside the pump lid had to be done as well. I have no pics of that, sorry. And the boost pin as well, on the right.

I had found a low low mileage 1.9AAZ pump body with zero main shaft play to use as my base for M-TDI Version 2.0. I had it totally apart and prettied up for when the lever got back to me :)

A little pump clearancing was needed in order to fit the newly modified throttle arm properly. A side by side of another nasty corroded pump, to see where the clearancing was needed for the new swing of the throttle arm.

The car was off the road for a month while I frigged around with the pump. I took it off and fully apart 9 times in that month, to do more clearancing.. more issues. blah blah. Then I started blowing my boost pipe all the time, because it was only crappy ABS and I was now making too much power!

I drove the car for the first real time in exactly one month this Friday night on my way to a bush party.. It did great! I need a boost gauge though! lol.

"Like" It is my favourite damn part.. but it died recently. An inner modification caused some metal to go through the pump and trash the vane pump.. causing no internal pressure.. :( So now I am rocking this Frankenshteenpompe. Good thing I got like 9 of these things.. lol

Those tires are like 5 winters old, insanely good value I got from them ;).

Timing belt roller is factory on the AHU/ALH pump bracket.

Just looking for some more details on the bumper hitch install. It looks like you welded a bar and hitch to the bumper. Is that it? And how much can you tow - weight-wise? I suspect the trailer and atv's are at least 1500lbs?

The rover has the larger pump snout, the same size as the ALH so the bracket needed boring. I also chose to use the AHU pulley and retain the twisting of the pump style timing setup.. as opposed to putting an ALH style on because I didn't have it. For this I had to slot the holes in the pumps case, not a big deal.. couple of holes and a round file..

Sorry I missed this reply Aivars! Yes I will describe. What I did was get the smallest receiver welded to a piece of 1/4 or 3/8 steel bar. Because my bumper is aluminum, I then bolted it through the bumper (1/4" aluminum) with four 12.9 grade bolts. The bumper does flex a bit with extreme tongue weight.. but nothing outrageous.

Yeah, I guesstimate my trailer to weigh 1500-1600 ish all said and done. Which gives it about a 125lb tongue weight give or take, I can lift it with no problem. I can then stand me (260) and my brother (175) on the tongue and its still alright.. So that is a rough tongue weight of 560lbs.. WAY MORE THAN I'LL EVER HAVE BACK THERE.

Being that it is a smaller car, it really matters how you load the trailer.. compared to pulling it with my f-150, the weight could be anywhere and not even notice. Misplace the weight with the car and it throws the rear of the car all over.

is 15-1600lbs too much to be pulling with a 2100lb car? Absolutely. HAHA Good thing its all just 60-70km/h to where I ride, I wouldn't be doing this on the highway.. Also my trailer sticks out nearly two feet on either side of my car! LMAO
