Title: Quick question on head gasket
Post by: clbanman on January 09, 2012, 09:26:32 am
I have a chance to buy a Golf that had an "engine rebuild".   It looks like it was a re-ring and bearing replacement with new timing belt.   Seller says oil is getting into the coolant - says it's the head gasket.   What are the odds that this could be fixed by just re-torquing the head bolts?

Gaskets easy to replace.

If it has an oil cooler, I would start there. I've heard of many failing and leading to a milkshake...

My experience, just about nothing is fixed by re-torquing, but that would depend on the mechanic that was working on it.  Odds are it needs a new head gasket (minimum) to possibly a new head if it was over-heated & warped.  My .02$
