Title: $5 home built centrifuge for WVO and all that other good stuff
Post by: burn_your_money on January 04, 2012, 06:59:30 pm
Alright, $4.50 if you don't count the glue sticks and epoxy. I'm currently testing the bowl to make sure it doesn't have any leaks. Pending good results, some time tomorrow afternoon I'll actually try and filter some oil. Of course I'll post some pictures if I can a) find a camera and b) it actually works.

Tyler, you need to make this work. DO IT.

I would love to be able to take peoples old oil change oil and filter it out.

YOU ARE THE MAN! I'll give you $50 to make me one. lol

+73 on this right here. i have everything but the centrifuge, and am waiting on finding $160 to get one from www.pabiodieselsupply.com ... BUT if you have crafted a way to make them for $5, well good God tell us!!

Well preliminary tests resulted in a 50% failure, so I'm pulling out the glue sticks again and will report back soon (I hope)

It got a little more exciting in the kitchen, but not in the good sense. Not surprisingly, balance plays a pretty big role in this. I was able to see that it would work if I had a bowl that was balanced. Since my bowl was so far from balanced, once it started getting up to speed the whole unit starting shaking and vibrating like crazy. It felt like a jumbo jet was taking off. So the next order of business will be to take it to a machine shop and see what they would charge to spin up a bowl. I'm definitely going to blow my $5 budget though unless I can convince one of my machinist friends otherwise... I'm glad I was testing with water instead of oil or I would have made quite the mess.

wdkingery I was looking at those centrifuges initially (although by a different company) and I really don't like the idea that you have to heat the oil first. My thoughts are, anything that is solid at colder temps but not once heated is going to cause problems in the pump/engine/injectors/filter if you don't do a complete flush on cool-down, or if you don't get your oil hot enough.

Don't put the solids in any fancy filtering equipment....I prefer to leave them in the vat.

I just had to recycle all my old truck oil that had collected in the garage. It was over ten gallons. It would be awesome to turn a fraction of that into fuel.

Some folks will suspend small centrifuges (like a modified Acme Juicerator) from the ceiling to get around the vibration problems

That's exactly what I was using, except not an ACME. The bowl I had needed to be modified to have a lid. I wonder if I suspended mine if it would work. Thanks for the link.

Would it help if the bar was raised to $20-25 ?

I need a centrifugical spinning filtering apparatus too.

Had I read this article before packing up the project I may have succeeded. Things have come up and then project is on the back-burner at the moment.

Seems like a lot of work and the potential for a huge mess if it comes apart. I've been heating my WVO in an open tank using a 4500 watt water heater element to almost 300* then pouring it through a 10 micron polypropylene bag filter. ( Mc master-carr is the best-cheapest source) Got a stainless screen first for the big chunks. No water, no particles. EZ enough.

The mesh on those bags starts to loosen up around 110F...

If you look at the specs, the ratings go to 300* on the polyester ones. I use PN 5162K81 and have  had no problem.
