Title: Pulling Engine MkI --Cherry Picker?
Post by: rs899 on December 25, 2011, 04:15:46 am
For once I have the proper tool for the job , a sturdy cherry-picker type hoist and I had time to read the manual.

Bentley seems to indicate that the Mk1 engine and transmission cannot go up and out , but must go through the bottom as a unit.

Izzat so?  That would be disappointing...

U can do it either way it's easier out the bottom tho use the cherry picker to support the engine while I remove the engine mount bolts then lower it down to the griund then use the cherry picker to lift the car way up in the air and pull the engine out from under the car

Exactly, its still gonna make the job a ton easier for ya. Instead of having a trans jack, and an engine jack, AND the jackstands all stuffed under that tiny car, you can do most the heavy lifting with the picker.

Put the engine down onto something with wheels so that you can easily slide it out.

Do not use nylon rope in any manner to lift either the engine or the car.  See previous threads titled Ooopppps.  Chains or properly rated lift straps.

There's a hole under the front motor mount.
 If you pull the radiator and front motor mount from the frame;
there's a hole in the cross member that I stick a hook in to lift the body.
Hook and a chain long enough to get close to the top rad support for the cherry picker to hook onto.
 Doubled-up seat belt strap works.

i only go down on autotragic... rest go up...

to go down the exhaust system down pipe needs popped out the way.. up no issue.. same for things like axles.. but i remove them too.. but someone lacking a 30mm axle nut socket helps them..

Well if I am going to have to pickup the car with the hoist I might do this ( which I have done in junkyards before).

Disconnect the tie rods, brake hoses, unbolt the tops of the struts and the through bolt on the lower control arms.  Drop everything with the axles on.  Saves some under car work

I've done it. Best way imo to pull it if you've got the space. Dropped it on the tire and slid it over. It was also -25c... I always pick the coldest days to do stuff.. lol

I did lift it really sketchy though... LMAO  :o :o :o

Sorry slightly off topic, but -25C for a swap! wow I thought it sucked installing my advance cable today in -17C

On topic, Like the other said, best way I found is out the bottom, make sure engine and tranny are together when removing and installing.

as was stated already, the mk1 comes out the bottom, and the mk2 comes out the top..

i have an electric hoist in my shop, its amazing for pulling/dropping engines and trannies 8)

The car is up in the air on jackstands, the bolts have all been anointed with Pblaster...but SWMBO came home.  My priorities have been rearranged to fix a loose steering coupler on her ride ( 380SL Benz ). I have been at that 3 days...you can't imagine some of the access problems on that car... >:(

http://www.benzworld.org/forums/r-c107-sl-slc-class/1504056-steering-coupler-replacement-380sl-without-removing.html

It also doesn't help that SWMBO doesn't consider the Rabbit a "car"

There's a hole under that motor mount.
That's what I use to lift it.
 Remove the front motor mount,
stick a hook in it and chain/strap coming from it to get it above the rad support so the cherry picker can get to it.

I have used doubled-up seat belt to lift cars using that hole and hook combo.

Your way looks good and works. Luckily there's a lip in the motor mount that helped hold the chain on.

You remind me of myself, cloths all greased up, double/triple layers and working in the snow  ;D
