OH SHART!! that sucks balls....
-
pulling the head as we speak.
i dont feel too good about it tho, i have a feeling this engine is toast. i mis-shifted 4th gear, and grabbed second. i was at the very top of 3rd gear when i had the mis-shift. im gonna say that the engine must have been turning 8-9000 revs when it went down...
im going to be AMAZED if the bottom end isnt messed up..
all i want for christmas, is coal! well, to be able to pour coal again...
:'(

Yowza... Do you think the t-belt broke, or that lifter got stuck in its bore causing the t-belt to get broken? Downright nasty either way!! Must have sounded interesting...
-
the engine died a quiet death, believe it or not.. didnt even crunch that badk just clattered a little bit, and the fire was gone from the engine..
i expected to find all the adjuster pucks laying in the head.
idk what happened first. my timing belt was a bit soft from a fuel leak, but im thinking that the lifter broke, and stopped the cam, then the pistons came up, whammy'd the valves, and busted the cam to bits. i ended up with 4 chunks, 1 piece is half the cam, one piece is a quarter of it, and the last 2 pieces are about 1/8th of the cam..

What are you goona do now k3vo!? that aaz you got sitting?

Oh lawdy :o :o

buddy that's serious. :o

And we all know what Santa knows, you have not been good this year so no new engines under the tree for you.
That is one mess of metal there my friend. But I know you have the ability to make a swap and if it won't be as good it will be better. It will run again.
Had a mis-shift myself getting off I-5 at Salem. 5th to 2nd. I was looking for 4th on the exit ramp and just as I was starting to play the clutch I thought NO that is to far west with the shifter. Left foot down hard. Just barely revved it. Nothing like that scrap pile of yours.
Sorry man, SH.

Want me to come out there and weld that back together for you?? ;D
-
Looks like the cam gear is still on...you didn't hit it sharply at 90 degrees to get it off did you LOL.
In all reality I think maxfax is on to something...a little weld and I think that will buff right out...
-
so, a little over 12 hours after i blew it up, i also got it running again!!
i got to hear it running before i went to sleep last night, i was completely satisfied!
all i did was replace the head and belt. i took the head off my TD block. didnt know my rabbit had a 12mm engine, i always thought it had a 11mm vanagon engine. anyways, i started looking at the block and head bolts, and sure as hell, there 12mm bolts!
my engine has a 17mm crank bolt, and says 16D on the back of the block.
17mm 6 pt crank bolt, 16D on back of block = usually 11mm block
19mm 12pt crank bolt, 1.6D on back of block = usually 12mm block
anyways, back to the engine at hand. i was in such a hurry to put it back together that i didnt have time to snap pics of the light valve kisses that were on the piston crowns.
another thing! remember how i seized this engine up about a year or so ago? yea, well the bores still look fine amazingly!
im building an AAZ head for this sucker now!

That's awesome
-
so this whole time you been telling everybody you were boosting the hell out of an 11mm block.. it wasn't really an 11mm block.. lol
AWESOME THOUGH! friggen eh its a 12mm and friggen eh that your building a 1,9 head :) WOOHOO this was the perfect break down.

this whole time i thought i had 11mm bolts. and ive boosted an 11mm block way higher than this thing.. this block has seen ~22psi..
my old 1.5 saw 30+ psi regularly.. 11mm bolts.
anyways, this vanagon engine in my car, it has all the markings of an 11mm block, so i assumed it was an 11mm block with gasser bolts.
WRONG! its 12mm!

really wasnt that much of a mess once i opened it up.. the head is jacked up, thats for sure, but the engine is fine, surprisingly. the cam, and head casting took most of the damage.. the pistons just had light valve kisses on them.

Had to laugh at the Cam still on comment. Just shows how much force that tapered shaft can hold back if the nut is on there pretty tight.
I would have been down for weeks trying to get a head and all to rebuild something like this. You go into the parts bin and come out smelling, well not like a rose, but let's say, diesel.
Good on ya.

well, i just got lucky is all.. i hadnt even planned on fixing it this easy actually.. i thought the engine was done for after the belt snapped.

Sometimes even the Sh****iest situations work out ok!
-
Were any of the rods stretched or bent?

Were any of the rods stretched or bent?
i didnt measure, but i eye-balled them, and they all still protruded out of the block evenly..

BTDT
When i first got my Caddy, it had less than 10K on a new long block. The PO didn't bother to put on the timing belt covers. Well, the alt belt breaks, flipping into the timing belt, broke the cam in three places. Wasn't quite as bad as yours. Amazingly, the block was fine. New Topline head. Man, that's gotta be about 75K ago. I have a little cam piece as a paper weight. :P

Wow this is a big save.

Awesome carnage pics. Awesome recovery as well.
