Title: Engine in - few problems
Post by: regcheeseman on December 17, 2011, 02:49:18 pm
Having dropped my engine into the engine bay I'm struggling to get it to run

It looks like your injector pump might be off a tooth or two.

x2!
Last engine swap I did was over dirt & a sheet of OSB, and I would've been terrified if that had happened to me--so, hope everything's alright!

I had heard that you have to tilt the engine to get the gearbox on for an 'inline', but that's excessive for a transverse.

You'll not be getting the driveshafts to line up like that ;D.

It all looks like new. Just goes to show you never know how a PO has treated his car... er... engine.

Was the nylon rope going through somethig sharp, or  is there no history of sailor's knots in the family?

having failed to get it in at the first attempt, I had lifted it back up too change the angle of attack and noticed the rope fraying - I had a proper strap on the bench but thought - 'it'll be alright'  ::)

I was actually pretty lucky, the engine was quite high, the bottom of the sump was level with the top of the engine bay, I had hold of the crank pulley at the time tryin to tilt the gearbox end down, the rope snapped, the motor swung down gearbox first and landed square on the end of the box without hitting anything on the way down
It dented the end case on the 02A gearbox and that was really all the damage
I had a perfectly good spare case on a scrap gearbox.

All in now and running fine. Much much better than that awful franken ever would. Only disappointing thing is a 1.9 is nothing like the fun of a 1.6 to drive.  :(

Why is it we refuse to listen to those little voices in the back of our heads when it comes to things like this?  Nylon rope?  Seriously?  I wouldn't trust it to hold the gate shut.

You need to get that thing running a little better if you think a 1.6 is more fun than a 1.9! I wouldn't go back to a 1.6......  :D

1/4" plate  ;) however it didn't help protect the motor in this case.

Maybe, but nothing is going to change the characteristics of that long stroke crank. Which is why I prefer the 1.6.

In a light mk1 chassis I prefer the feel of the 1.6, maybe the lazy torquey 1.9 is quicker - but the 1.6 is more fun.

Depends on the roads I suppose, ours are all twisty tight backroads and some singletrack, lots of action in the gearbox around 3rd.  ;D

The trouble with Americans, is that their country roads go down to three lane....          Each way.

Contrast with Brit's use of the word:(http://img94.imageshack.us/img94/3328/countrylane470x353.th.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/94/countrylane470x353.jpg/)

its still a nice addition. if you would have dropped it on the oil pan, i imagine it would have scratched it a little, but thats it..

If that had some grass growing in the middle to the point that you had to mow it, that is what over 1/2 of the roads in my county look like. In Holmes County Ohio there isn't a 3 or 4 lane highway, just single lanes going in each direction...unless you count the turn lanes in town :D. SO Mark, not all Americans think that way ;)

x2.. i got roads just like that around here.. i been ripping the suspension out of mk1s on roads like that for years now..

you gotta drive almost 100 miles to get more than 2 lanes in each direction.. around here, the passing lanes are the only multi-laned roads..

I see all the American movies, and I'm yet to see a 'Brit' type road yet... And they never lie ;D
Then there's Canada, all pine trees and snow...

We've just had a sprinkling of snow. That's 4 consecutive winters with snow in the south of UK, that was following about 15 years with barely any frosted nights.
Each time the MET Office predicted further warmer winters because of G/W.  ::)
