Title: Oil psi 1.6td
Post by: jb86 on December 14, 2011, 06:43:49 pm
I installed an electric oil pressure gauge in a tee with the 20psi idiot light sender
Started the new engine at first start up, idiot light went out, gauge went to about 100
As it warmed up pressure went down to about 30 at idle
Running rotella t 15w 40
Air in fuel, spent a couple weeks still trying to figure that out
Next start up (block heater for several hours, it was warm)- idiot light right out, gauge sat on "0" for atleast 30seconds then shot to about 60, ran shortly at idle stayed less than 30
Is that too low?
Gauge just seemed to be strange
I just bought a mechanical gauge I will tee inline to compare to electric gauge
What psi should I see at idle & 2,000rpm or so - warmed up
Oil pump is oem stock (meyle) for turbo diesel.
What oil is best?

What was the comparison between gauges, mech to electric?  Sounds fishy to me.  I run the Rotella you are and like it just fine.  I change at 3000 intervals.

1.6td should be a blue 18psi sensor vs a 22psi white one.. aka no 20...

warmed up should not be below 18psi at 2200rpm..

I am running 5w40 mobil 1 turbo diesel truck oil with one quart lucas.  I see 20ish psi warm at idle and 30-35psi at 23-2400rpm

I'm going to install the mechanical gauge along side the electrical one tomorrow
What I did was- the oil filter base had a metric thread for the idiot light sender, I tapped out to 1/8"npt, ran a stainless steel line to fender well where I tee'd to an electric sender for gauge and an 1/8"NPT sender for idiot light (oem listed as bar 1.4 or so) I installed one from summit racing, at one time I knew the spec, it's the oem pressure
I had the car running last week and according to one post here, I should be right on for psi
I just want to compare the electrical to mechanical gauge just to verify
Thank you for responses
Jon

I added mechanical oil pressure gauge
I have 2 tee's
Installed the 20(something) psi sender for idiot light, sender for electric pressure gauge and the mechanical pressure gauge - connected with a stainless steel line zip tied on top of coolant bottle (hood is still off)
Started (fairly cold engine) idiot light went out after a couple seconds, electric gauge went to 100psi, autometer 2177 mechanical liquid filled gauge went to 80psi at idle
After a little running electric was showing maybe 10psi higher but at idle they both showed maybe 25-30
My duramax diesel truck - fully warmed up, while driving is usually close to 80psi or over, maybe 25-30 at idle
I'm planning to continue to run rotella
Thanks for responses

continuing the thread hijack about lucas -
i run my car primary on lucas or similar at a rate of 60% of the crankcase's contents, with the remaining 40 being motorcraft 15w-40
(have found quite a hoard of some destined-for-mexico-all-in-spanish Rislone http://www.barsproducts.com/4471.htm that is about the same for reduced price) .. has done me well.. motor is slightly quieter, uses little to no oil in comparison to before.

can get the oil light to go out fairly easy with a gas starter
