Title: How much for TD pistons?
Post by: fatmobile on February 05, 2006, 01:19:42 am
I'm needing some new turbo diesel pistons.
What's the cheapest place to buy them?
I found some for $200 a set, I think they are mahle, with the rings and pins. Is that the best I can do?
It sounds like he has a few extra sets.
 I'm looking for a set that's 40 over.

myke_w: What specifically have you found that makes a Brazilian 1.6lTD piston worse?

My statement was based on historical data, based on the fact that they used to use flat sprung steel c clips for pin retainers that occasionally let go and ate the cylinder walls, any piston you use should be using the original style round clips, I've also heard from my old boss (30 + yr vw mechanic) that certain aftermarket pistons of less than oem quality would drop the skirts and have all kinds of otherdefect issues... Personally, I'd stick with Kolbenschmidts, or german Mahle, unless the brazilian stuff is of verifiable good quality, just use caution, afe wbucks savings aint worth a complete ripdown.
