Title: 1997 jetta tdi or idi?
Post by: wdkingery on November 14, 2011, 07:46:52 pm
A friend just bought a 1997 jetta tdi. But i thought they were 1.9l idi motors? It clearly had tdi badges on it.

I would think it's early TDI.

It could be an idi, IF it was imported into the US. If it was originally bought new in the US , it's a TDI

There were 1997 TDIs in Canada - I've seen one.  Generally speaking, regardless of the car manufacturer, all bets are off as to what you find under the hood of a Canadian car.  We have all kinds of oddballs as we're often the dumping ground for the previous generation's leftover parts, at least until they run out.

in the USA, there never was a 1.9 IDI available. only 1.9 we got was the TDI..

There are some lurking around  here in the US though they were never sold here originally! Canada they had both but i thought it was rare to see an idi in the 97's.

It just looks so like mine.. Injectors in the same spot and all. Pump was missing the smoke screw tho.

When new, they came with a plastic shield over the top of the engine.  That sometimes gets removed though, so it may or may not be there.  The pump itself is different - there is no LDA and there is a large connector with multiple wires going to the pump.  The glow plugs and injectors are in a different location on the head as well.  Other than that though they are very, very similar - the actual block is essentially identical, just the pistons and head are different.

They really are just an evolution of the IDI engines!

there were no commercially available 1.9 IDIs, i should have said. yes, they are around. i know of a 1Y idi thats literally 2.5 miles from my house. the old guy that owns it, ran it once, over heated it bad enough to destroy the head, and now he wants $1100 for basically a questionable long block.. cause he had to pay $2200 from VW brand new. he can sit on it and age for all i care. if im spending over a grand, i want there to be no doubt in my mind that its gonna work good for a while..
