Title: Engine wont start
Post by: fourstar on October 29, 2011, 09:23:19 am
Hello!

My 1.6 td just wont start, and doesn't have any signs of life. It started in the begining of this week. I tried to start cold engine in the morning, the engine fired up instantly with a little rattle. I let it work in idle for ~5min and then shut it off, and the restarted again for a minute. Everything was fine until after one hour when I tried again, but this time the engine wont start at all, and had no signs of life, no pounding, no rattle, only little white-greyish smoke comming out of the exhaust.
I checked fuel lines, they where okay. Took injection pump apart and everything semed ok, but stll won't start. Then I swaped another injection pump and nothing changed. I'm tired of excesive cranking and recharging the battery. Maybe you guys know whats wrong with my idi.

i would say your glow plugs are NOT coming on..

maybe the fuse on the firewall is popped..

take a test light and probe the buss bar for power to the glow plugs..

DO NOT USE ETHER!

Better yet
Do what I did
The Vince Waldon system on the plugs
I put in a 4 fuse panel
4 different colored 10ga wires
With ring terminals at the plugs

or, do like i did, and un hook the power feed to the stock glow plug fuse..

then take a ford starter relay (el cheapomatic, to free.99 at the junk yard.. mine was free.99)

take and run a power wire from the battery, to the relay, then from the relay to the fuse on the firewall.

then either control the relay with a manual button, or make the factory glow plug power wire excite the relay..

i have mine on a momentary switch, that turns off when you let your finger off it. its like that so i cant leave my glow plugs on and fry them..

my plugs are "semi-pimped glow plugs"

Vince Waldons setup is by far better, but it is considerably more expensive to build too..

i fixed my glow plugs for about $5..

new timers are WAY MORE than $5...
