Title: cooling oil on a vanagon with AAZ
Post by: paolomarks on October 09, 2011, 03:43:15 pm
I have a vanagon 82 diesel with AAZ.  my boost maxes out at 10 psi. no black smoke even at full throttle.  I have an air /oil cooler as well as the stock water/oil exchanger.  cooler has a fan and is located at the bottom of the passenger D pillar, just to the right of the battery. It's not a very ideal place for maximum air flow and thats probably why I still have a problem with oil temps.  Going up extended grades it can reach 250F and the coolant temp gauge needle approaches 3/4. I know people have plumbed the oil cooler to the front , I'm a bit worried about the oil pressure drop from doing this and was wondering whether any one has tried installing an inline pump for the oil lines.  My oil pan is a stock 1.6 Turbo vanagon and has 2 oil drain plugs which I could use as return and intake for the front mounted cooler and an inline electric pump could be used for circulating.  What do you guys think?  What would the ideal pump be for this application.  ?  Thanks  Paolo

you should be fine if you use big enough oil lines.. there is ~100psi pushing the oil around..

Thanks for the reply.  How big is big enough?  , and does the cooler inlet/ outlet have to be the same size or can I reduce down to the 3/8 measurements of my cooler.   Paolo

only problem with having it clear up front, is there is going to be a TON of oil left in the lines when you change oil..

So I'm thinking maybe 5/8 line for the 30 odd foot of line to the front and back.  What have you guys used for hose.?  NAPA quoted me 5 bucks a foot!  Thanks, Paolo

might be easier to get metric fittings on 1/2 (13mm) oil lines..
