I got my Westach EGT gauge model 2c2-1 and I also got a micro 1000 thermocouple and extension. Does anybody know which pin on the back of the gauge is positive and which is negative? The instructions say to hookup the black and white wires to the extension lead but the gauge comes with red and black wire and the extension lead is red and yellow. Anybody know how its supposed to be hooked up? Thanks.

Connect black to black on the wires then try your luck to the gauge. Put your fingers around the thermocouple, if the gauge goes up in temp, you got it right. If it goes down, swap the leads at the gauge.

In America the black to black works for most wiring applications. Only in Germany would they consider and earth, or ground to be a brown colored wire. Must have some connection to dirt and earth colors.

I guess I wasnt so clear in my description. I have red and yellow coming from the probe but the gauge has red and black coming off it. I guess Ill just have to do some trial and error.

i would connect the red wires to each other, and then connect the black and yellow wires..
thats what makes most sense to me..

I have the same setup and didn't use the extension,
spun the wire into a coil and slid that over the post on the back of the gauge.
Doesn't help with which connection to use, I can't remember that.

When I wired mine and checked with a propane torch it was wrong.
I just switched the wires at the gauge and it worked.

Your only issue will be to get the extension correct, as the probe and gauge will only work one way. Googling should find the answer.

Red is always negative. Black always positive. Yellow always positive
White is always positive except when with black. ;D

I thought earth is British speak. Is it also German speak?

Sorry I am a "soil scientist" I think, breath and eat dirt for most of the day. When doing electrical work I just think of grounds to be what I am standing on not what is on the bottom of the coffee cup.
I always learned black to be negative. Is red a brit thing?

yup, i sure did! saw Josh down there too, got to drool all over his Caddy.. i wish i would have been there earlier, and would have driven my rabbit.. i really wanna put it on a drag strip. it wraps the speedo in a hurry with the new close ratio box..

thats completely backwards from how the americans rig stuff up..
again tho, theres only 2 wires, and if its wired wrong, you simply reverse the wires.. nothing gets fried or anything like that. the gauge just reads backwards..

Remember we are only talking thermocouples here, and which way round to put the compensated extension leads. Reversal of which will create errors in the readings
British house wiring was red 'live' or positive, black neutral, or negative and green earth. Along comes Europe, and we get brown live, blue neutral, and green with yellow stripe for earth. Then along comes VW and creates another mix....

Didn't mean to mislead you ;D I thought you had black and white leads, and red and yellow, and red and black.
Conect red to red and black to yellow. Not that it matters but the yellow and the black are actually the positives for thermocouples
