Title: 1.6TD head on a 1Y block???
Post by: Jimmy Diesel Junior on September 06, 2011, 12:35:25 pm
Hello all.

I have a mk2 golf van with a 1.9 n/a 1y engine.
I'd like a little more power.
I have a 1.6TD with a cabbaged bottom end but good head.
My question is, can i successfully bolt my 1.6TD head to the 1.9 1Y block.
If so, what head gasket would i need?
Has anyone done this conversion??
Is there any other information i need??
Thanks

1.6 head will make it run worse, increased compression, worse port design, and smaller intake valves.

why not use the 1.6 turbo instead of pulling the head. I thought that you can use a 1.9 head on a 1.6 block, but not the other way around. Or modify your pump, bigger intake and exhaust. You'll have more torque than the 1.6 had

u can put a 1.6 head on a 1.9 and it will run fine, but it will not run as good as a 1.9 with a 1.9 head.  i know someone that has an aaz with 1.6 head running na, and they like it, but i'm sure a 1.9 head would be better.

swap the turbo bits onto the 1Y engine.. thats the best option you could do. then you dont have to crack open the engine..

turbo kit is all external bolt ons..

as was stated, the 1.6 head would make less power than the 1Y head would.. just turbo charge the 1.9.. dont change anything. leave the head alone, dont change the head gasket, dont put the 1.6 head on it.

Hi guys.
Thanks for all your help?
Is it possible to bolt on all the turbo parts onto the 1Y engine??
I thought that the turbo engines needed turbo valves?????
Also I thought that the TD had lower compression.
If it is possible to just bolt on all the ancillaries from a 1.6TD on to the 1.9 1Y?
If this is the case then it'll make life even easier.
can anyone confirm this???
Thanks guys.

im running a 1.6 n/a in my rabbit..

it has 15 psi boost. plenty of fuel.. really gets up and goes..

yes, you can fit the turbo parts to the 1.9 (no, were just lieing to you so you will blow up your engine, then we can laugh)

you will need to get an AAZ intake manifold tho, or else flip the turbo and manifold and run the 1Y manifold..

if you end up not using that 1Y intake manifold, i will buy it off you. it would work great with my particular turbo setup..

Hello and thanks for the info.
Would a 1.6td manifold do or does it need to be a 1.9aaz manifold???
As for selling my 1Y manifold, I live in Southern Ireland  :o  :o
Other than that, you'd be very welcome to it mate.

the 1Y/AAZ ports are D shaped, and bigger than the 1.6d/td ports.. the 1.6 manifold will bolt up, but it wont be ideal, the ports wont line up right, and it will introduce turbulence..

and uh, shipping from ireland MAY be a deal breaker? ive never dealt with international shipping..

Ha i love it. Made me laugh. 'Deal breaker' That's a new one on me  ;D

Regarding the port shape, I understand what you're saying. Thanks very much and Ole from Ireland.

Do i need to change the 1y injectors or just get turbo nozzles in them? Cheers

You can probably leave the injectors alone.

You only need to change the intake manifold, the exhaust manifold will bolt up.

I bought my 1Y intake from Germany, shipping wasn't bad.

You will need a custom oil return line. I'm not sure if the 1Y block has a hole in the back of it for the oil return line or not. If not, you will need to swap the oil pans. Either way, custom oil line is required but they are easy to make yourself.

is there something wrong with the 1Y head?

and were you serious about selling your intake manifold?

Hello. The 1Y head is perfect. I just thought that if the heads were interchangable, it'd be easier to just swap heads.
Regarding the oil return, i have 1.6 td sumps here so no problem.
I would sell inlet no problem but i'm in southern ireland which is about 2 million light years away from you  ;)
Thanks for all the help lads.
