Title: Head Gasket Question

I noticed that the head gasket blocks several passages for coolant flow. It is a 2 notch OEM gasket with the VW/Audio logo on it.


There are like 1 or 2 journals for the coolant to pass through around each cylinder but they are blocked.


Does anyone know why?

I am thinking it is a Diesel and they needed more heat?

Additional holes in the block and head are for ease of manufacture, to facilitate removal of sand from the casting cores.
