Title: Surprising 1.6D.....
Post by: silentdub on July 20, 2011, 08:47:38 am
Ok, I got the head off along with the cam and lifters out. This engine had a broken timing belt, the only damage that I can see is a broken liefer on 1 cylinder.

The valves may be a little bent, but all of them are closed and move freely, no cracks in the head either!!!! What is up with that? There is a groove between the 2 valves, but no cracks.

2 notch OEM HG too, VW/Audi logo on it, I am guessing it is original, the gasket was broken by cylinder one too.

The tops of the pistons are smooth with no damage!

Amy I lucky or what?

It was probably running. The broken belt was still there, well, whats left of it anyway. Other than being filthy, this is a nice little motor.

All it needs is a little love.

yeah man, I may have some cash left over for some VTECs. Maybe we can put some VTEC inside this thing and take it from 53hp to maybe 54.5. Although, I'll probably lose 10 foot lb tq.

The way I had my pump earlier this week it was like a vtec, it wouldn't pick up until 4200 rpms lmao

I think the definition of v-tec is : all the turbo lag you could ever want in an engine without the turbo.

I took a further look and I do have 1 bent valve, slight bend. That and one broken lifter was all that is bad. The head looks perfect too, no cracks, quite clean, smooth surface too. I am not sure it will even need machining.

after a valve crash, its a good idea to replace any valves that got squished.. otherwise they will look like this:

yes, thats a valve head poking up out of the piston..

Just googled an interesting read about valves...

I planned on replacing them, I assumed they were shot.

No damage on the pistons either, not even marks.

All new lifters, guides, seals.
