First. I searched. I found a pump rebuild thread here: http://www.vwdiesel.net/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=4353 but can't access it anymore.

I also found the information below from an older post:

"for a good deal on the pumps contact Northern Diesel in Detroit MI, 586-739-7222, I think a rebuild is around the 400 dollar mark but I could be wrong and dont hold me to it. they are very thourough and do nice work, Giles also does nice work, give giles a call and check on a rebuild or reseal and see what he says, it never hurts to ask, and another source is jack at vwdieselparts.com"

I have a pump from an 85 1.6 that I need rebuilt in which I have some questions.

Is it possible for a mechanically inclined person to rebuilt the pump themselves?

Is there a DIY around by any chance?

If I decide to send it out, are the places noted above still the best?

I am not sure if the pump has any problems, but it has been sitting for a few years with the lines open, so needless to say, I want to get it rebuilt especially since I am rebuilding the motor.

I've got a very good pump rebuild thread downloaded for a peugeot pump (same) of the net - it's fantastic.

I'll go find a link... but I could email the condensed version.

Good write up. I may rebuild a pump in the future, but for this project, I have enough on my plate, so maybe I'll just send this one out.

Giles is the man when it comes to diesel pumps especially if you want some performance, you do pay for it but its worth it.

Slight highjack, but as it's about pump rebuilding... I found this link on how to fix a leaking LDA, I'd like your educated opinions, as I need to do this - Good instructions?

i sent mine to www.thedieselstore.com just about 1.5 months ago.

$430 shipped. totally rebuilt pump

you will have to send them one back, tho.. but you ship it back in the box yours comes in, and the price includes a return shipping label.

1 year unlimited mileage warranty. (unless you bio, wvo, umo [which was my plan])

all adjustables are painted yellow tho.

I put new bushings (complete teardown) in mine 20kish miles ago, just gotta be super clean about it and can't forget ANYTHING.

I used a DIY on this site or www.vwdieselparts.net can't remember which.

Why rebuild it if it's not broke? I'd just flush it out real good with diesel, and turning the shaft to push fuel through the high pressure outlets and see what happens, afaik you can't hurt the engine with a junky pump, it didn't hurt mine when I tried it just ran horrible and if I knew then what I know now I probably could've fixed it rather than buy another pump.

I spoke to Giles and yeah, they want like $750.00 to rebuild my pump.

I hear that they do excellent work and they are awesome, but I have to tell ya, $750.00 is more than rebuilding the entire engine. I will end up sending them the injectors, $50.00 each seems like a decent price especially for someone with their expertise.

I'm not sure what I am going to do with the pump. That price is out of my range for this project.

There is no way you can buy the parts for an engine and machine work even if you assemble it yourself for 750.00 in the states. Giles will do a regular rebuild for less I think, unless that is the regular rebuild. The guy above that posted a 430.00 rebuild price isn't bad. Sometimes you get what you pay for. You could ask Giles to build it to what you want and he pretty much will do it.

Not including externals, like waterpump and crap like that. I can do a basic rebuild for this motor and keep it under $750.00!

Especially since there is no head or piston damage on this one.

If I needed crank, rods and pistons, then no, it will cost more. From the looks of this motor, I should be able to skate by easily.

Ok it is just terminology then.

I would call it freshening up, not really rebuild. Even then just freshening up the head and bottom end cost close to that.

I am kind of doing this on one of my pumps for fun.  There is a cheap dvd on ebay that a guy sells where he breakd down and builds up a na pump.  Then use that link for the lda stuff if needed for a turbo pump.

I sat in front of my computer and followed his directions and that part was easy if you have tools, and a clean work area and containers to keep everything in order!  I also took pictures of a few marks that were set on my pump which are indexed specifically so that I could get it back together the same way. 

I just happen to have an old pump that worked but I messed up the high pressure end seal on the car and it started to leak again.  Then I saw some wetness on the throttle shaft so I figured why not break it down.  I also got a seal kit with everything needed for the turbo model and some mainshaft bushings for less than $30 from a guy on ebay.

My mainshaft bushings had play in them, not the worst I have seen in my short vw ownership but why not do it when the pump is off ya know?  Had a friend doing that for me, if I took it to the shop they want $100 just for that job with the piece ready to be reemed to fit.

My other issue thus far has been the throttle shaft bushing.  They make different sizes and I was afraid to mess up mine so I have left it in for now.  I do not see wear marks or discoloration so maybe I am good and was going to turn it 90 degrees and roll with it.  Those aren't cheap and I was going to probably pop mine out and take it to the local diesel place and see if they can order me one before I finally build my pump back up.(i have not started yet)

That brings another question in that how is an average joe like me going to know what is worn and not?  I see no obvious scuffs with mine.  It pumped fuel, delivered fuel and the cold start worked and I was getting like 45mpg with leaks and air intrusion.  But for me the final thing to find out is if there is some parts that could blindly be replaced while its opened up to start fresh.  Like the rollers perhaps, etc.?
