Title: Strange galloping coconuts sound when turning right...
Post by: ventureforth on June 23, 2011, 11:29:05 am
So, whenever I turn a hard right (like all the way or almost all the way), I get this clacking sound like someone hitting two coconuts together to imitate a horse a la Monty Python.  It happens a little bit when turning hard left, but very subdued.  Turning right, it's almost comical.

Thoughts?

Thanks!

Seeing as I have very limited time to do the repair, and the first free moments I get will be dedicated to troubleshooting some IP issues I'm having, how safe/advisable is it to drive around like this?

I had one start making noise last winter in the extreme cold and quit as soon as it warmed up, and its still in the caddy.
Better to replace as soon and most convenient as possible. When they break it won't move out of its own tracks.
And if it locks up or binds while at highway speeds, it could get ugly.

Also make sure to get rid of the guy in the medieval outfit hiding in the truck. Or at least take the coconut halves out of his hands

fix it before the IP or risk being turned into a Newt!  And you won't get better.

I'd just grease it and slap a new boot on. Cost $10-$15 and is probably faster than R&R ing a whole nother shaft......for me anyways since I do each side every winter and rarely remove the whole shaft.

Just make sure when you pull the joint off the shaft you support the shaft so the inner joint doesn't come apart instead, pretty much doubles the work you gotta do then.

I went a year daily driving a clicking axle.. left me stranded on new years eve in a blizzard enroute to a partay.

ITs up to you ;)
