Hey, I am in the works of timing my aaz motor and was using vince's guide, now I have a couple questions. It looks as if my aaz has the 2 piece pulley so instead of loosening the bolts on the backside of the pump I would loosen the three small bolts on the pulley to adjust my timing? Secondly does the gauge method work the same way as with the 1.6? I got a slightly high number I show my pump is currently timed to 1.8mm I have confirmed my cam is good and my pump was locked with its timing mark and when I turn the motor over I show no binding which leads me to believe my crank is off the timing would this throw it out that much without showing sign's of binding (Motor ran before it was pulled from PO car)? Thanks for any Help guys, Aaron

your pump is timed with a 6mm pin i believe.. way different timing procedure than a 1.6...

would any body be able to link/provide me with the procedure for this motor I would like to get it all timed and ready to go before I install it into my rabbit.
Thanks, Aaron

Super easy. Install the dial indicator and tool, set the engine to TDC .Loosen the three bolts and rotate the pump hub until you get the timing you want. Of course you want to check after turning the engine a couple of rotations, but if you think about how it's done, you will want that type of pump always

So the procedure is the exact same just a different tool to lock the injection pump right? (which i figured out a small bar for a tap and die set works wonder's)

thats the pin i was talking about..

so i am just going to confirm this all
1. set motor to tdc
2. install timing tool
3. turn motor counter clockwise until gauge stops spinning
4. zero the gauge
5. turn to tdc
6. adjust according to dial (3 small bolts on pulley face right?)
I do not want to eff this up :D
Thanks, Aaron

Yes you just have to remember to move the 19 [? ] mm nut and hub to do the actual adjustment, not the pump or belt pulley

line everything up to TDC.. loosen the 3 bolts on the pump hub, twist pump till 6mm pin can be inserted in sprocket.
insert pin in sprocket..
tighten everything up and drive away!
(it really is this easy)

Vincent Waldon:
If your pump mounting holes aren't elongated then you probably have the 2-piece IP sprocket with 1 central bolt and three smaller ones around the outside?
If not... hmmmmm.... somethings wrong... you gotta have one or the other.
If so, your pump is the later version of the AAZ that is pre-timed... no dial indicator required. You'll see a slot in the top of the pulley where a 6-7mm drill bit will go into a hole in the pump body to set the correct timing.
If you look closely at the big nut in the centre of the pump sprocket you should see the classic yellow paint indicating a calibration adjustment.
(this is a quote directly from Sir Vincent Waldon)

Ok so I definitely have the newer injection pump so I will correct what I did then *doh* lol good thing the motor hasn't been run yet thanks for all the help and clarification everyone
Thanks, Aaron

I timed a motor like that today and checked with a dail indicator and timing was like .85. timed it to 1.05 and it was much quieter and had a lot less smoke and more power.
Just a heads up, don't trust it fully.

pin still gets you close enough to run/start..
