Title: the fuel filter!
Post by: wdkingery on May 04, 2011, 12:31:04 pm
ok so it's time for a group vote..

Can a gas fuel filter be used in place of a diesel one? anyone think of why that won't work?

autozone wants $30 for my fuel filter.. that's almost 10% of the cost of the car!

i hit 45mpg on my last fill up!

Ive seen people use the small inline style filters on the feed line to the pump before.
but who knows how restrictive it is..?

VERY RESTRICTIVE.. they clog up every week or so.. why do you think the diesel has such a huge fuel filter?

just buy the right filter. i about shat the first time i bought a filter for my diesel.. its part of owning a diesel, changing the fuel filter..

autohaus az has them for under 20.00 get three and get it shipped for free. It is never a bad thing to have multiple fuel filters. I carry one in the trunk at all times.

What about the mk1 style filters, are they any good? Spin on style? I think those spin-on ones are like 8 bucks each... if you could find the top housing part off an old mk1...

If you neglect maintenance on a car based in cost relative to the value of the car. You're car will not last long. Cars ARE moneypits. Make friends with that fact.

However, my caddy has a small diesel benz filter directly after the tank, it's been on for about 10k and it's not that dirty and the truck is in the 100whp range, so it cant be that restrictive, lol. Seems to make the fuel filter (Running TDI fuel filter with "heated return") last a long time. TDI filters are also a lot taller. But also considerably more expensive. Probably in the $35-7 range. But hey, if you would have told someone 20 years ago that it would cost $55 to fill up a vw diesel rabbit in 20 years, they would have smacked you in the mouth.

You gotta pay to play.
