Title: I was about to go on a drive, when I noticed...
Post by: gabo on May 01, 2011, 12:32:02 pm
... A large kink in my hood. I figured some hoodlums had jumped on it in protest to my Montreal Canadiens Flag. I opened my hood just to be sure and it nealry srpung into my face. The cause? This:(http://a6.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/225598_10150177696691168_502096167_6843078_4050125_n.jpg)

Now I think I'll have to turn it into a cube, minus the engine and wheels I'm keeping. Any suggestions? Keep in mind I'm a tig welder / fabricator by day.

Well-- Thats one way to lowering a car...  :P

I think you will be able to fix this. Jack up the car and it should sink down to where it's supposed to be.  If the lower part is rusted out, you can weld a new outer skin on it.
It won't be pretty tho... ;)

I did the same in the rear of an Golf 2 and it's been that way for 3 years now..

(sorry for any misspellings)

A guy on the vortex welded the front half of a Caddy back together because of strut tower rust. Of course, Caddy's are harder to come by but it can be done. If you are a welder then it's easy peasy. The Caddy guy had never done any welding before tackling such a huge job and it turned out awesome.

u could fix it, but its much simpler to move on to a new shell

Depending on how easy it is to find a good replacement I would probably go that route. Of course, the cost of having the "new" vehicle safetied is another issue

Must be the paint colour. Here's mine the back of mine from a month ago.

I chose to repower another shell rather than repair it, car was getting tough all the way around.

The remainder of the body looks good, the 3 other strut towers are solid.

I was just atarting to get used to the colour too!

I was thinking about making some crazy tube framed contraption! It's not too far from my line of work!

weld that tower back on, or weld in a fresh tower.. if theres enough metal left to work with..

if you do a tube frame, you should lift it, and put some samruai running gear under it with some 30" tires or so.. 8)

I think you can still get new towers....  could be wrong though.  It's a pretty common issue.
