$200 craigslist special 82 xj750 seca

runs pretty good, was laid down but not hurt too bad.
waiting on a few parts to make it road worthy.
should only be $300 into it by the time it is ready to ride
I'm super stoked, my first streetbike!

Nice! some guy paid me $50 to take my Craigslist Special(are that badges for that?), and gave me the title.
I didn't think it wold run, but it pretty much fired right up, and has way too much balls for my field.
Still a lot further from road ready than yours, not sure where I am going with it.

Something tells me you are going to have difficulty getting a VE pump to work right on either of them......

hahaha, yeah...
I had my eyes on a Honda CB900 Custom(100HP, 10 speed, shaft drive) but the guy would never answer the phone...
this bike is still pretty rowdy though(82HP and 600LB) I have not ridden it much, or hard(bent brake rotors will do that) but it was spinning its rear tire on dry pavement long before full throttle.
probably not gonna do too much to it, pod air filters and build a 4-1 exhaust with the aircooled VW stinger I have sitting in my closet.
it will need paint too, as the tank paint is flaking where it is dented, and am not sure what color to go...

I'd really think twice about the individual air filters. A different pipe and different cleaners can open a can of worms regarding jetting.
I think this one will be all right now. But, someone did a WHOLE lot of jetting to make it work right before I came into it.
http://i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x338/Dakotakid1/GPZ.jpg
Still sorting out the valve clearances. This uses shims UNDER the buckets.
-
I'm not afraid of a little jetting, I have done it before with single cylinder bikes.
and while I know that a four will be more difficult to jet properly than a single, I think I am up to the task.
and I believe the XJ yamaha bikes have shim-over-bucket lifters, so short of a special tool(much like the special VW tool) setting the valves should not be too bad.

got a carb synchronizer? your gonna need one for that bike.. 4 carbs are not fun to tune by ear..
-
dont have one now, but I can get one.
all of that is to came later though, right now the focus is to simply get it back on the road.

This is the best for the best price.
http://beemerboneyard.com/carbtune4col.html
Bike shops charge more for a one-time job. I will need one of these soon as well.
I think you can sell them used for pretty close to this price. If you get good at it, you can use it to work on other people's bikes.
Oh, yea...I use diesel fuel to wash bike parts off. NOW, this post can't be removed by Vince :D!

rode the bike for the first time today!
I am pretty pleased so far, the front wheel is a little tweaked, which makes the front end shake above 45MPH.
there is nowhere local to get it straightened local(mag wheel) so I need to get a new one.
there are a few on ebay, and I am waiting to hear back about shipping charges on some of them.
for now, I will just stay in town and keep the speeds low.
other than that it runs great, the carbs have cleaned up well and it runs and idles fine, makes lots of power.
I have not had it to where it really makes power yet(6K+RPM) and am already impressed.
it makes alot of transmission noise,(whining) but I think that is because of the straight cut gears connecting the crank with the mainshaft, it will sound much better with the mufflers removed.
-Owen
-
You should boost that thing.
-
interesting thought, the 650 came with a turbo from the factory...
but probably not, it is plenty powerful as it is(more HP and torque than my car)
just bought a new front wheel with new discs and tire $75 shipped to my door!
not sure how long it will take to get here, but a nice deal anyway.

Looks great! Wish we could get bikes that cheap over here.
I'm currently working on a 88 Ex500 (same age as my GTD). Just a few details remaining and a technical inspection (the exhausts came with a plate that said "circuit use only", how will I mend that? ;D)
-
"circuit use only"?
Is this simply a removable plate to bypass the exhaust baffles when running on a race track? Would help to see a photo.
Not all bikes are "cheap" here. I just sold this super-low mileage (906 miles original) '79 XT 500 Yamaha yesterday for $1500.
I badly wanted to keep it, but I have two more already.

I wanted more money for it, but was afraid no one would answer the ad if I asked for more. The low miles engine was/is sweet (whimper/whine!).
I really should have stripped all the good parts off it! Live and learn.
-
yeah, most of the bikes in this ones category(large displacement standard) are going for $1800-3500
if you are patient, and call early on the cheap ones you can get lucky every once in a while.
I might sell it at the end of the season to make a few bucks off it, and do the same next year...

OMG-I own/owned about every bike in this post! The wife has a EX500--I have Yamaha 500 flat tracker/ice racer (and a ton of parts)-a SR500 stock frame (really should get that back on the road) a turbo seca parts bike (crap bikes) a 82 Seca 650 that was my street bike turned drag bike-and another 650 Seca parts bike. Oh Yea-had a Seca 750 street bike i put 50k on.
Some 750 hints: block off the anti-dive valves on the forks-they never worked for beans anyways.
Find some other Yammie from that era + get the front master cylinder. Then get some braided steel brake lines to match things up. That silly hidden cable operated master cylinder was a terrible idea from the begining. Also a good time to get rid of the covered handlebars.
There should be no more trans noise than any other bike-they all have straight cut gears. And yes-its shim over bucket. There is a tool that holds the bucket down to change the shim.
Its a good solid dependible bike-I did have a Dynojet jet kit in mine-4 into one-and air filters-ran good. Unless you could chase down that stuff today, I'd leave it alone.
-
I spent most of Saturday on the xt 500 in the Black Hills. Was refreshing.
Sunday, I felt tough and did the same thing on the TT 500 (with the hotter piston in it).
Afterwards, I could not get to the Bud light tall boys FAST ENOUGH as I was desperately trying to cut the edge off the vibration! There is such a huge difference in the two.

yeah, I am thinking about getting the master from the yamaha magna(same bike, different trim)
gonna have the parker store make up some hoses for it.
I also have a new set of control switches(not from the same bike, bit could easily be wired in to work) to make the bars look a little less crappy.
as for the transmission whine, I am used to thumper dual sports, which have very little drivetrain noise, so...
-Owen
-
I think you mean a Maxim. ;)
Heres my thumper

heres my Seca in drag trim. Its running a 16" Maxim rear wheel to get some gear ratio with the shaft drive-and I grafted a Honda 750 rear tail section on it.

yeah, I do mean maxim...
-
V65 magnas are pretty ***in bikes tho.. 8)
-
Honda had top-end oiling problems and subsequent camshaft problems with those water "V-4" engines (from this era). Plus they tend to lose the top gear if you horse on them much (is it 5th or 6th?). But, they sure seem smooth. I rode for part of a day with two guys from Minnesota (last summer). One of the bikes was very low mileage and the other bike had mega miles on it. The mega bike did not have top gear.
-
I just saw this thread. Way to go dude. Bikes are lots of fun.
I've owned a few. Couple Yamaha XJ650 turbos. Fast, fast bike for what they were back then. I boosted mine to 14 psi of boost instead of the stock 7psi :o. An old '65 Yamaha YDS3C Big Bear Scrambler. Wish I never sold it. Yamaha RD125 twin. Lots of fun. Honda Hawk Automatic. Suzuki BP105. Honda XR200. Suzuki DR350. I still own a '73 Suzuki GT750 "Water Buffalo" and a '75 Suzuki GT380 "Sebring".

yeah, I really enjoy riding.
the bike pulls hard, really hard(supposed to do a quarter mile in 12.3)
its kinda funny my bike makes more power and torque than my car, and weighs about a quarter as much
gonna get a jet kit(the carbs need going through anyway) that has a stage one, for stock motors and a stage three for modified ones.
stage three is supposed to be perfect for bikes with individual filters and four into one exhaust, so I am gonna try that and see how the bike responds.

Spearco:
I spent a LOT of time on a 380 Suzook many years ago. That crazy "Ram Air" system actually worked. It must have been a simple heat-sink effect.....but, I remember running around in-town and ALWAYS being able to lay my hand on the top of those cylinders and not even get burned. I loved the 2-stroke triples. Sure wish I could ride a late model 550 Suz. (with disc up front) for a few days for fun. I never had the opportunity to get near a 750 "Buff." Always had the urge for a nice RD 400 as I had the smaller counterpart (250) and remember the wonderful (?) purple/blue bilateral contrail I would leave behind! Sumbeeotch would really wheelie, too!

yea, see, the few im familiar with, were low miles, and still in top condition..
-
Nice collection Powered. My 1st street bike was a rd350-another one I had and loved (and would fit nice in your garage) was a Honda 350-4.
I also have in the barn (untouched in too many years) 2 Yammies-a YG-1 + YJ-2-60+75 cc--they were tow bikes when i was drag racing a FJ. I should try to find a good home for them. :-[
Right now, the only running bikes are my Kawasaki Concours+ the wifes Kaw EX500.
-
just got my new front wheel, but the rotors are the wrong diameter!
super pissed, supposed to be from the same bike but the rotors are an inch too small.
found another set on ebay, but for another $100, which I dont really have, so...
-Owen
-
Was it the wrong year of bike...errr what?
-
nope, posted as being removed from an 82 seca 750, exactly the bike I have...
-Owen
-
i still have a pair on my turbo Seca parts bike you can have cheap. In fact, make a list-I'll give you what you need for a song.
-
As for individual air cleaners (pods), the induction noise on this Kawasaki (pictured earlier) is absolutely annoying and painful at certain rpm. I believe the original air cleaner would have muffled much of that....wish I had it.
When really romping on this bike, first you get a roar of the engine itself......then the induction noise....then the scream off the pipe...all in seperate stages, sort of like how the early test planes would go through stages as they broke the sound barrier. Guess it would be real cool if I was still 18.......

New love:
this has been lurking in the shadows of the storage units for over two years. Finally, I had to poop or get off the canner! Berryman's carb cleaner and new o-rings all around. New sneakers, aircleaner, all brakes, a bench carb-synch, and soon, a new jockey as well. Anyway, this is as far as I got today. I rode it around the storage unit streets and it is amazingly smooth, responsive, and QUIET....unlike the Kawasaki!

It was a low-mileage seldom-ridden fortunate low-budget Craigslist score which I was too lazy to pursue for two years. Hope to have it finished real soon.
-
Wow that is clean. Are you getting rid of the kawasaki now?
-
You're right....probably should. It's the same old story: in so deep...can't get ooot (financially). EVEN WORSE than these damned VW diesels....
