Not sure if this is the right place to post this so if not sorry. I have recently bought a 98 jetta tdi as a donor car and when i get time this summer i plan on pulling the motor and trans and swapping it into my 84 jetta. The 1.6td thats in the car has 196,xxx miles and less then 10,000 miles ago the timing belt, and head gasket were done as well as the injection pump and injectors were rebuilt. It runs like a top and i have several people who are interested in the engine but i have no idea what they are going for. I know the tdi engines are anywhere from 1500-2500 but i wouldnt think the idi motors would have the same value. Any help on this would be appreciated.

no, the IDI engines do not hold their value like a TDI does.. 500-750 bucks should be a decent price. (for you, and the buyer)

Under $1k is about fair for both. Depends on the mileage, etc. The big thing is that it's running.
Geographic location is also a factor. If you live in PA (the VW motherland), or in Canada, you probably won't get much over $600 due to availability. In Canada, probably more along the lines of $400.
I live in the south, and they're quite hard to find. I sold one for close to $900, due to the limited availability in this area.

DEFINITELY agree on the south thing. That motor running would bring 1G easy...no questions asked. I would buy it for $750 with the quickness. Here in the south, diesels are hard to come by...turbo diesels are MEGA rare.

Like they said, depends where you live. If you are down south and can prove that it runs and all that good stuff $1000 shouldn't be hard to get. The rebuilt pump and injectors should also bring the price up

i forgot about the rarity of these engines in the south.. up here you can find diesels fairly easy, but i can almost see canada..

Yup, I'm half tempted to go up to Canada buy a few engines and bring 'em down here and double their price

Yea I live in Maryland near the pa line. I was thinking between 500-700 for it just glad everyone was able to confirm my thought.

I've heard tell that you won't get through the border with them, just FYI. They'll want to see EPA certification and other crap, unless you get lucky.

so what would you say about this one?

I've sold 10+ engines to the States and no one had a problem. They met me on the Canadian side and then drove across the border themselves with the engine. Apparently if I brought it into the states it would be a different story.
