Title: 1.6TD and 1.9TD pump question
Post by: ilikevwdiesel on April 09, 2011, 02:44:48 pm
what are the differences between a 1.6 and 1.9 TD pumps? I know the camplates are different but are there any other differences? The reason I ask is I may install a 1.9 longblock in my 84 jetta and I want to have the right pump. I have a 1.6 TD pump here with an AAZ camplate and the governor mod, wondering if that pump and the T3 turbo will do the job well on the AAZ longblock. The only thing that will be 1.9 are the block and head, everything else will be from the 84 1.6 TD engine setup.

i believe the AAZ cam plate has a tad bit more lift, and a small ramp leading up to the injection lobe. its for the pre-injection (dual stage injectors)

right but not all AAZ engines had two stage injectors. so I wonder if it makes much diff if you use a a two stage injector camplate with single stage injectors?

The aaz cam plate is basically the exact same profile as the 1.6td cam plate with more lift.  The two stage injection is controlled by the injector itself not the cam plate.  I have found the aaz cam plate works really well in a 1.6 pump for a bit more power but does make the pump more sensitive as far as timing is concerned.  I'll take some measurements tomorrow if I get a chance but from what I remember, its almost an extra mm of lift when comparing the two.
