did 81 jettas (diesel) get the old style fuse panel with the old ceramic fuses?
im used to everything 81 or newer having the plastic blade fuses, and the fuse panel should have 2 rows of relays..
this one has an old style fuse box in it, with one row of relays in the fuse panel, and one row of relays clipped on top of the panel.
the car in question is a 12/81 Jetta D
and would anyone know where a wiring diagram is to be found?

the bently has the correct wiring diagram, and yeah it has the older style fuse panel, i can still get them new actually.

So, what does Slot J and L (#1/#3 relay location) do/what is it used for?

it appears that they are not used...
and it looks like you have a fuel pump relay in slot L..
ive never seen a relay with a fuse on a diesel car before.. just on the gasser cars..

Confirms my suspicions. Someone swapped out the diesel fuse pannel with a gasser one. Direct replacement, functions exactly the same way.

bingo.. we figured it out.

I've seen the elusive '80 Jetta diesel that has the early style fuse box like those but yours is not an '80 Jetta.
Whats wrong with that one. As longas its been swaped out correctly.
