Title: engine question, AAZ vs? had a fire Lost golf TD, just a little angry.
Post by: gribur on March 27, 2011, 03:22:11 pm
well had a fire and lost everything including my AAZ golf.  just wondering if insurance comes through, should i get another AAZ or go with something nwer. i liked the idea that the AAz Z was going to be so tunable, but i am wondering if for the price if a newer engine would have more potential?  its all up in the air right now, just thought i would start some research in case.  I may be able to save the pump and turbo from the engine but i am not sure how those parts would have held up to the heat?

Sorry to hear about the fire. I'd start fresh and get an ALH or AHU and do the M-TDi conversion into a nice clean rust free mk2 chassis if possible, or a later mk3 chassis. I wouldn't bother trying to save any of the fire damaged parts. They are always going to be suspect after getting cooked in a fire. Start fresh and with a clean slate. Its always best after a fire IMHO.

Well a newer engine will definitely have more potential. Just depends on what you want to spend. That's the nice thing about the AAZ. Aside from the 1.6TD, it's the cheapest engine to get the most out of. A guy on tdiclub is building a 450 hp tdi based on CR shortblock with a Cummins-style CP3 pump but the costs are something I could never justify, at least not to my wife  :D.

My favourite engine is still the AAZ just because I don't have to go to a tuner to get the most out of it.

so really as far as at home tuning the AAZ is the best ?  What hp would you reach without interior mods or injector mods, just stock engine and cranking up the fuel and a boost pin swap?  As far as an alh or alu are these engines you buy chips for? and how much quicker are they then an AAZ with new boost pin and maxed fuel etc?   -

I had a fire recently myself, and a clean slate is the best way.  I lost the 500hp 20v 5 zylinder gas job I had been putting together over the last 3 years in the fire.  I still have the car tho and am going diesel now.  I saw it as an opportunity to do better, not a setback.  Hope everybody is safe and healthy.

good news is that everyone is safe, ty for asking.  ya i have spent a ton of time tring to get this car together, it was going to be our family DD.  I was so excited about putting it all together and getting to know the engine.  It isnt looing good on the insurance side of things, fingers are dtill crossed though.  If nothing comes through it will need to be a fresh start for sure.   I was really hoping to keep the turbo and injection pump, the fire reached 1800 at the roof and around 600 at the floor and it doesnt look like the engine was touched by the fire just got nailed by the heat.  What damage do you think would have happened to those parts at those temps. I am grasping at straws here, but i need a car for us as i had the completion of the golf pretty much timed right for the demise of our current vehicle.

cr short block, is in an na 1.6d?

and if the engine doesn't look like it got hot i would consider using it, how do plastic and rubber pieces on it look?
