Title: question for AAZ experts
Post by: ilikevwdiesel on March 25, 2011, 02:08:58 pm
what year did VW start putting K03 turbos on AAZ engines. I have a Canadian 95 Golf here with one on it, and the pump has the adjustable sprocket. so it must not be the original engine then?  Anyone?

I've a 94 that had the same on it, but the UK market may have been different? It also has the EGR guff on it, and electronically controlled pump. I've also had a 94 with no EGR, T2, and electric-free pump?

Depending on chassis, country of origin etc there were many many different flavours of the AAZ engine floating around at any given time, and in your case there's always the chance that someone has replaced the IP on an original engine.  No real way to know which is which unfortunately.  In terms of turbos, the eco version shipped with a K03 wherease the non-eco had a K14... pretty sure they were on the market more or less side-by-side, starting with early Passats.

Having said that, the adjustable bolt IP sprocket is definitely the sign of a later-model injection pump... one step removed from TDI.   ;)

Hello, My 96 golf has the adjustable IP pulley on it as well as the K03 turbo.  A couple of interesting differences I've noticed between the AAZ's and 1.6's include:AAZ Intermediate shaft pulley is smaller, but end gear on shaft where it engages the vacuum pump is larger. Rod Caps have built in scrapers which clear oil from the new windage tray.  Rod Cap bolts are stretch and 12 point.  Oil pump has taller gears for more pumping capacity. Pistons have larger 26mm wrist pins and recesses around the pin                  P.S.  Hey Ilikevwdiesel, I noticed that you offered a PDF of the AAZ bentley manual to another member of this site.  I would be very interested in this pdf as well!  Thanks, paolomarks  at yahoo. you know what.

I wonder what bentley would think of me spreading copyrighted material around the intertubes...
