Title: Intercooler (will it work?)
Post by: Milkman on March 18, 2011, 05:36:16 pm
I'm looking at this intercooler for my '95 Golf  AAZ:

(http://i756.photobucket.com/albums/xx202/MILKMAN4131/th_Intercooler.jpg) (http://s756.photobucket.com/albums/xx202/MILKMAN4131/?action=view&current=Intercooler.jpg)

It is out of a 1.8T. I'm just wondering if I can make it work, or should I be looking for something different? I'm off to the autowrecker tomorrow, so I can check out other options if anyone has any suggestions. My car has A/C & I don't want to remove it, so there isn't much room in the bumper with the condenser in there.

if this is for a mk3, iwould look for someones used fmic setup from an aba, or the factory setup from a tdi if you want it to be pretty factory looking

Not to worried about factory looking. Right now I'm looking for something that will work well & be relatively cheap. I have never installed an intercooler before, so I don't want to dump a bunch of cash on something that won't work.

If I was to pull one at the wrecker, any particular vehicles I should be looking for??

Ok, off to the wrecker with my tape measure!  ;)  Hope I find something. Can you guide me in any directions of what vehicles to look for?

dont get a volvo intercooler, they are HUGE, they fit, but not without serious modification..

what celicas and supras got air2water?

ive never seen a intercooled 280zx before..or a 300zx, up until the newer 96+ body style..

All-tracs had them, 2nd gen mr2s? I'm not super familiar with the toyota model line up but they are the only company that built mass-market vehicles with atw ic's that I know of. I saw a legacy turbo a while ago. they've top mounts. There are a lot of cars with ic's in the junkyard. The starion/conquest one is nice and compact and all alloy no plastic end caps to blow off.

Chevy/GMC Cyclone/Typhoon A2W IC's factory, and a 300hp 4.3L V6..

Well I didn't find any that would work, too big or way too small. The few that looked promising were all in vehicles with serious front end damage.  >:(

So I guess I'll order new, or see if someone has one left over from a project or an upgrade. I don't know much about intercoolers, but I have been doing a little research. Bar & plate or fin? What size inlet/outlet? Measurements that work? 27x5.5x2.5?

Youll want bar and plate. They flow better>
If you want a full kit (intercooler, piping couplers ect.) :
http://cgi.ebay.ca/28-TURBO-INTERCOOLER-2-PIPING-KIT-ELANTRA-TIBURON-/250734535585?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item3a60f163a1
That is basiclly the same kit I have, But I purchased higher quality t-bolt clamps since the ones it came with all broke when I was tightening them
They used to sell just the intercoolers in the size you specified there, the same one that comes in the kit, but I cant find them anymore.
The kit came with more then enough piping to finish all the piping and has worked great for me.

Thanks for the info. That is kind of what I was after, something that has been done and works.  ;)  I'll e-mail them about shipping costs. Time to play, I'm looking forward to this.  ;D

It looks as though a friend of a friend might have a stock SRT4 intercooler for me. I'll keep you updated.  :)

I would rather expirment with something free, rather than pay $200 for something that may or may not work for me.

Im not farmiliar with the srt4 intercoolers but if it works that would be great. That kit definatley does work perfectly for the MK3 generation golfs, I have a 93 td and I fit like a glove, with slight modifications to the bumper of course.

should fit right around your radiator, may be a bit thick tho, might have to move the radiator back towards the engine an inch or so..
