Hi everyone, i've recently purchased a mk2 Golf GTD (intercooled 1.6TD, engine code 'SB')
I've changed the timing belt and set the timing using this guide: http://vincewaldon.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=24&Itemid=28
Ran great, but then it suddenly cut out whilst I was doing 75mph on the motorway after covering about 190 miles.
I've found one of the 13mm bolts on the pump was loose so i'm guessing the pump moved causing timing to go out.
Also found this loose between the block and pump:

Have I put it back on right?:

These two wires also had one end loose, does anyone know where they are meant to go?

Finally my pump looks like its missing the black shock absorber type thingy that attaches to the red circled bits here:

Is it important? Cheers

Don't know about the shock absorber thingy.
That black wire should have 12v with the key in the *run* position and no power when it's off. It looks like that wire came apart which has the same affect as turning off the key.
-
Thanks. So those 2 wires should be joined together? Will test with a meter tomorrow to double check.
Found a few other wires that were brittle and had been bodged together so going to fix them too.

The shock absorber thingie is the linkage that gives you fast idle when you pull out the cold-start handle.
From the picture it looks like it's installed properly... the true test is: does your idle increase when you pull out on the cold-start handle?! ;)
You twist the top of it to adjust idle speed.

Thanks vincent, and thanks also for the great guide - made timing an engine for the first time a breeze!
This is what I meant by the shock absorber thingy:

I wouldn't worry about it.
-
Ah... *that* shock-absorber thingie... yup, safely deleted.

The black thingy, toss it into the box with the chocolate teapots, self adjusting clutch cable, windows ME disc, fuel magnets and whatnot. ;D
