Title: 1.6 TD lacking power
Post by: myke_w on January 16, 2006, 05:41:56 pm
I just rebuilt a 1.6 td, new pistons, nozzles, good no play turbo, valve job, etc. It just doesnt seem like Iim making the kind of power I should, almost feels like the wastegate is stuck open, can climb hills in low gears but acts like an na on the highway going over hills, can hold 55 an thats about it. I have the k24 turbo, does anybody know how to check to see if the wastegate is closing? Also, could a malfunctioning boost anaeroid cause that? Could I turn fuel up to see if that made a difference to test the anaeroid? Any advice is appreciated.

Have someone step on the accelerator while you watch the pump to see if it goes all the way to it's high-end stop.

Hmm,
I hadn't really thought of that. The pedal is certainly going all the way to the bottom of its stoke inside the cockpit. not sure about outside, but even at part throttle the thing doesnt pull like it should. Nothing like my jetta td... which hauled balls for a diesel.  Still wondering if theres a way to test the anaeroid. I will try to get a boost reading sooon, but last I remembered, the turbo was making good boost. BTW what is the expected boost for a k24?

Maybe at idle you could remove lid of spaceship and push the diaphragm down and see if revs go up (I think this should work)
Also race up a strip of road  twice; once with spaceship (aneroid) supplied with boost air and then with pipe disconnected and bunged up with a screw; To see if it is even more sluggish w/o boost fuelling. If no change then...

doh, good call....
should it be a big difference? I'll get some boost readings asap

Ok, I pulled the anaeroid tube off, made no difference. So how can i make due for the time being? also, im pretty sure the turbo is making adequate boost, it read 12psi on the car it came off of. Can the anaeroid be fixed?

Oh forgot to mention I have a parts pump, If theres any way to tear the anaeroid off the old pump I could try that...

If the LDA isn't working it is much more likely that the diaphragm is bad.

ok, so turbo isnt making but 7 psi even when the pedal is mashed. guessing the wategate is leaking. if the turbo doesnt make full boost, then im guessing the anaeroid cant kick in all the way either.

Just out of curiosity, do the garret wastegates have the same leak by issue that the k24s seem to have?

Does the car smoke at all? Boost may be low due to a lack of fuel.

He's got a good point.  On my truck when the fuel filter starts clogging up, I usually first notice it by not being able to get my boost guage any higher than 5psi.
